Indian Institute of Technology B.Tech Review By Pawan Jhanwar

IIT Roorkee is one of the oldest and the best technical institute in India. IF you qualify for the institute don’t even think twice to join the college. This wasn’t my first choice college but due to scores I was left with this option. Initially I did have some heebie-jeebies but once I entered the institute, I knew there’s no looking back. The best part is that you are not allowed to stay privately while studying in IITs and therefore even though there were few locals even they had to stay in the hostel. The placements are amazing and so is the faculty. I don’t think IITs even needs a review as every year the number of students applying for IITs is only increasing. Over the years the fees have increased but the kind of value that it provides, everything is justified.

Academic wise the college is one of the best. I know many people may argue or may have other opinions, but I hardly opened the books after getting back to the hostel. The classes were sufficient as we obviously didn’t have the option to bunk them and stay back at the hostel. The teaching method and the kind of knowledge that IITians are imparted is next level. I have interacted with many students from different engineering colleges and do wonder how they can even call themselves engineer. The syllabus is in tandem with the curriculum of IITs and great that we have finally been tagged as IITians.

Most of the faculty members have passed from IITs and have seen changes the way IITs operate. The kind of knowledge and what it requires one we pass out is been passed on from our professors to us. They were keen on making sure that every student attain something big and contribute so that their institute names scales new highs. The faculty members were amazing and had a great experience in knowing them. Their judgments and how to handle students has been great and this is the reason if one survives the first year, they will go on and become an engineer.

I seriously doubt the rating agencies who rates as per the placements. The average place back then was of Rs. 6 lakhs per annum. Many students even broke the bank as they pegged such huge packages that was even hard to believe. Being an E&T engineer the software companies were my first choice and got placed at Accenture. Unfortunately, after a year I left the job as I had ambitions of higher studies. Talking about the placements of the college all got placed with some great offers that can be boasted. Even now when I check the college placements, I have noticed that international companies had made IIT Roorkee as their first choice and therefore if you are choosing Software of E&TC, rather than opting for any IIT, you can check out IIT Roorkee.

The best part about IIT Roorkee is that they provide residential kind of hostels for all the students. There are 3 girls and 10 boys hostel and hostel names were Cautley Bhawan, Azad Bhawan, and Ganga Bhawan among others. 4 hostels were for bachelors while 6 hostels are reserved for post graduate students who are married. The rooms were amazing and were given on twin sharing basis. Even then the hostels were fully Wi-Fi and had all the facilities like hot and cold water, attached bathrooms, and good enough beds and shelfs for each student. The hostel also provides locker facilities and has common area where all students used to gather more often than not. Also, sports were divided as per hostels and that was something which we all looked up to. There was mess area that served vegetarian and non-vegetarian food and you can choose the food as per your choice.

If anyone doubts the area size, they can Google it as the campus area is not just the largest in India but in the world with a campus area of 358 acres. The campus has 1 academic centre, 21 academic departments, and of course 13 hostel buildings to go by among others. 3 Playgrounds and indoor sporting facilities are also there at the campus. There are as many as 5 guest houses and if someone has their parents attending the campus they can stay there paying a nominal fee. The college has built one more 30 acre campus in Saharanpur and a 10 acre campus in Greater Noida for different courses. There is a mess facility and a canteen at the campus. One can live life inside the bubble of the campus as during my 4 years stay at the hostel I remember stepping out just 10-15 times.

Life at the campus was all fun as after college hours we had enough time to chat and watch movies in our rooms. Of course we were not allowed to step out after 8pm and that seriously didn’t bother us. I had the best time staying at the IIT Roorkee campus and made some memorable moments that will stay in my heart forever.
