BMS College of Engineering B.Tech Review By Aakash Patel

BMS College of engineering doesn't need any introduction as it is good in all the departments. The college is a deemed university and one of the best in the business. The college offers the best resources for students who want to pursue engineering. The institute is 70 years old and it took some time for the college to be where it is today. Things didn’t change overnight as the college kept tinkering and today is definitely one of the top engineering colleges in Bangalore where there are numerous engineering colleges. Both Comed-K and KCET scores are for BMSCE Admission and one more clause that the college is that an aggregate of 60 is required in PCM while many engineering colleges offer the 50 for the same. Thankfully I qualified in all their criteria and experienced what it takes to be a part of the best engineering colleges not just in Bangalore but in India for sure.

Academics are great at BMS. The classrooms are ventilated and make the life go easy for students as the college hours are just too much. 8-10 hours daily is what you spend at the college if you are a student of BMS. There are scholarship programs available and for those who can't afford such hefty fees can apply for scholarship. The academic depends on the infra and the kind of teachers that are on board. Talking about the infra, the best classrooms, best labs and the best resources is what that can be easily found in BMS. There’s no way that one escape at BMS if they try for shortcuts.

Do I even qualify to rate the kind of faculty that was there at BMSCE. I don’t know the count but the teachers in my course were nearly 50, if I combine all 4 years. Thus the student-teacher ratio is fantastic and so are their teaching ways. The easy going nature of most of them made us last in the hectic schedule of the college. The best colleges always have the best faculty at their premises and that has made BMSCE the best.

South India is associated with IT firms. This is where BMS College of Engineering Placements cell has other ideas as they invite companies as per respective departments. Like for my Mechanical course the companies that came were Kirloskar Brothers, Tata Group, Thermax, and Ashok Leyland among others. I was roped in by Thermax at a package that was beyond my expectation. The other departments of course had various IT companies at their helm and the average package was in range of Rs. 5-6 lakhs. The numbers are staggering considering that not many colleges offer the equivalent pay package even to their M.Tech students.

There are 4 boys and 4 girls hostels and the hostels are divided as per years. Like for 1st and 2nd year students the hostels include Boys hostel Unit III and for 3rd and final year, we were relocated to Main Hostel Unit I. The same was the formula for girls hostel as well. The hostels are great and have a common TV lounge, water heater facility, indoor games facility, laundry, and gym facilities. The hostel also had mess that served various dishes but mostly south Indian dishes. My only question is that at least for a change they can include Gujarati food as well as we were so many students who came from Gujarat but had to make peace with South Indian food. The rooms and other facilities though had nothing that can make students worry as many international students are also a part of this college.

The college made the best use of space available as the college was spread across 15 acres and considering the departments that they had, they decided to build large buildings to accommodate them all and at the same time provide all the facilities to students as well. The college had a huge sports complex and all the sports such as basketball, football, swimming and pool were available. Among the lab there were 7 in all and all of them of highest standard. There was also a dance and music room as well. The college had a cafeteria and something that had more rush than any McDonald's outlet in Bangalore during evening. The campus was fully Wi-Fi and the best part was that the medical facility was available at the campus 24*7.

Talking from a perspective of mine, life at BMSCE was tough. The main reason was that the classrooms ate up half of our time. If that was not enough, participating in some extracurricular activity was also compulsory at BMSCE. One can participate in sports of their choice or can join the dance or the music but choosing one field was more or less mandatory. It was a way of unwinding but taking time out in developing the skill was next to impossible. In a nutshell, the campus life was good on some days boring as well but I loved every bit of it.
