Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce B.Com Review By Tuhina Das

I am from Mumbai but decided to study in Pune as my grandparents used to stay there. I wish I joined this college during the junior college itself but after passing my junior college from Mumbai, I took admission here for B.Com. Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce cut off then was 88% and now it is over 90%. The reason being most of the seats are filled up by the junior college students and only few are left for the new comers. Therefore, I would advise students to enroll here from the junior college itself as this college has swag of its own. Loved the way people used to call me as soon as I told them I study in Symbiosis. Symbian is what we were referred as and I am more than happy that I am an ex Symbian. From studies to sports the college offered something for all.

I was among those who attended most of the classes as the strength of the class was 120 and only 10 of us were regulars. Total strength of the B.Com is 600 as the classes are divided in 5 sections and each section has 120 students. It was same then and it is still the same. More often than not you will find somebody from Symbiosis topping at the University level and therefore for me I would say the college has done well. The attendance was not compulsory and there’s no strictness but still the college has hold its reputation.

The faculty members were one of the nicest and still remember Vidhya Madam who took care of us like their children. Since we were a handful of students who were regular, I was among the favorites and was the one who would display anything new on the notice board. There are in all 10 departments in our section and each department had different faculty.

The college spent generously to get the best professors on board and it was unfortunate that many students stayed away from this opportunity. I am glad that I interacted with some of the best minds available at the college.

The placement well notified us and I was the first one to try my luck at the interview. I always wanted to work in the bank and Federal Bank’s HR team was the one whom I approached. They were highly impressed by me and after passing out I worked for them for the next 4 years. I would thank college for giving me such an opportunity but many would complain that they didn’t have the opportunity. Well they can only blame themselves as the students who sincerely tried actually got the placements.

This is where college should have done something as there are various outsiders that come and join this college still our college don’t have its own hostel. There’s just 1 NRI hostel for boys and girls. The NRI hostel building is the tallest in the road and one can see that from a distant place.

They have a separate mess in the hostel which is common for boys and girls and also a separate common area for both. We are not allowed to enter as the guard is very strict. There are timings in place as for girls 8 pm and for boys 9 pm. They are not allowed to go out post that. From Senapati Bapat Road to F.C. Road there are enough flats and PGs for boys and girls and that is where students are left to find accommodations at.

There were 4 institutions previously in the college which is now left to 2. The college of Arts, Commerce, & Computer Science, and the Law College. The SIBM building has been remodeled to Admin building and the admission procedures, and all are now done in that building. The campus is small and therefore everything looks congested. At times, the college became too crowded and even though the timings managed by college were good but still used to look like a railway station in the noon.

There’s enough parking space and as many as 3 canteens in the small campus. Technically 2 as one is NCC canteen which is outside the campus area. The connectivity from the college is excellent as there’s a bus stop opposite of college and rickshaw stand just outside the college. Thankfully just 2 departments are left in the main campus which is the original campus and I hope that it stays the same.

The campus was small but had some huge moments. Loved the energy, people and teachers to the core. The college hosted various events during the course of the year and just can’t imagine how the time flew by. Fresher party was organized at the campus in the year I joined and can’t imagine the kind of reception we had.

Most of the students who come here are from affluent family and the college also knows that but post that year the college made sure that such events will be held outside the college premises only. In all, the college life that I have enjoyed at Symbi campus.
