Chitkara University, Rajpura B.Des Review By Harshit Kumar Singh

Starting from the looks of Chitkara University is very beautiful with its lush green environment. It has almost every facility like gym, swimming pool, fast Wi-Fi in whole university, a big cafeteria and for hostellers there are many options to choose from rooms and hostels are well maintained with laundry and mess included. As a design student I chose this, because of its fees only being 90k/ semester, the building for designer’s i.e., Picasso block was recently made and is beautiful from inside and out, you are taught by NID Graduates and there are at least 5 visiting faculty in every module, so you get knowledge from vastly creative mind. As per rules and regulations Chitkara has its own uniforms which are mandatory except for fashion design department, which is good. Cafes and places to hangout are spread all around. Sportorium is where there are different types of sports from basketball, volleyball, football, badminton, skatepark to indoor sports like foosball table, chess, arm wrestling etc. It's an affordable University for some who wants to study design every faculty in design is good, well-spoken and guide you with everything.

I took B.Des in Ux/Ui. The eligibility criteria same as they have shown on their sites. I gave an interview on video call them received the mail regarding my admission. The fees for any design program as of now (2023-24) are 90k per semester which lowest and affordable if we look to another institution offering Ux/Ui like UID, Wud, etc. The design department is very chill to its students and free as it should be unlike Engineering departments. They have 75% attendance criteria.

The faculty of the design department is very good and well spoken, well I would say they also criticize your work very often but if you ask any design student at any colleges it's same for all. The deans are very helpful in any aspect. Your semester is divided in modules and each module has up to 3-4 visiting faculty for whole month with 2 faculties teaching you, so you get to study and grasp knowledge from very different creative minds and let me tell you all the faculties are NID Graduates.

We have a Placement Cell, since I am still studying in the college so I can't talk about placements, but I interacted with some of the seniors according to them the placements for design department are very good.

I am a hosteller, so I can answer this quiet well. The infrastructure of the hostel is decent as of my hostel but there are 4 other boys' hostel, and they are good as well I have heard. The fees of the hostel rooms are according to the number of room sharing, AC/ Non-AC and common/attached bathroom. Room sharing range from 1 to 4 sharing. Non-Ac rooms are provided with Coolers instead, so you'll not die in heat. The other facilities in hostel are 24/7 cold water, a common refrigerator, a common induction and a common microwave on each floor. The hostel warden is strict with rules on drugs and other narcotics stuff other than that they are very chill. If someone has to go out of the college, they have to apply for gate pass, get it approved from warden and your parents get notified from system every time you leave/enter the campus. Hostel mess food is decent I would say they have rich and nutritious meal with different desserts at the end of the day. The fees of the hostel include mess fees and laundry which happens twice a week. The rooms are provided with a bed which has storage, a cupboard, desk with a light on top of the desk, a book rack, a balcony with cooler and clothesline. Washrooms and toilets are clean and if something is not working in the hostel you can register a complaint and they'll get it fixed in 24hrs.

Each course has its own block. There are 4 different blocks in engineering and one block for design students. The classes of design students are held in Picasso block and art gallery. Picasso block is newly made and is beautiful from inside and out with very different architecture and interior design. Classes in the university have AC, projectors and switch boards so you don't die out on your devices. There are 3 big grounds named alpha, beta and omega zone. There are placed made to hangout in these places and no one interferes if you are even sitting alone. The cafes are spread whole throughout the university and there are two big cafeterias named square one and square two.

Chitkara University is also known for its fests and lush green environment campus. There are many clubs made for every kind. Fests are common and frequently organised. If you are a hosteller you get to witness jamming events every night in square one. There is crowd here as Engineering and BBA department has a lot of students, but it's not suffocating.
