National Institute of Technology, Calicut is one of the most renowned and prestigious institutions in the country. The institution has been ranked among some of the top engineering colleges in the country. Established in 2007, it aims at providing quality education on par with international standards. The college helps in establishing a strong understanding of basic engineering principles and inculcates innovative research capabilities.

The admission to this institution can be done by qualifying the JEE Mains examination. If you have the cut-off score, you select the college and further report if the seat is allotted. Further, the process is straightforward with document verification and payment of the fee. I enrolled myself in B. Tech Electrical Engineering at the college. I feel that selecting this college to pursue engineering was the best decision I took and it has helped in shaping a career that I always dreamed of. NIT, Calicut campus is lush green and is situated far from the crowd and hence, you can study with no disturbance. One more thing that I would like to share is that I belong to North India and still I felt home as everyone in the campus was so nice to talk with.

The curriculum for Bachelor of Technology is similar to other NITs and is in accordance with global standards and trends. The syllabus helps in getting in-depth knowledge about the subjects and their practical applications. There is not much practical training or exposure to industry standard procedures in the initial years. However, this is compensated further with numerous industry and field visits. Although there have been massive fee hikes in recent years, students can make use of scholarships offered by the Government and other organizations. The college schedule is not very hectic and gives ample time to pursue own interests and study daily.

There are slight concerns about outdated topics in the curriculum and the recruiters often seek that knowledge in students. However, a lot of importance is given on involvement in research work apart from the curriculum, and the college has affiliations with several prime national and international organizations to promote innovation in technology. The research or project works also receive grants from the Governments in order to further develop them into successful innovations.

The faculty is comprised of highly qualified, knowledgeable, and well-experienced lecturers who mostly graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology and other reputed institutes in and outside the country. Each student is allotted a faculty advisor, who helps in all of the academic-related queries throughout the calendar year.

Few members of the faculty may not be as interactive as you would like, but others are helpful and respond well to queries. They inspire to take up innovative projects while on campus and provide required help in that matter. Guest lectures, seminars, and conferences are also held by the college to enhance our horizon in terms of latest developments in the field of engineering. Faculty is one of the main reasons why NIT Calicut is always ranked among the top engineering colleges in India.

The rate of placement in the college is good with several core, management, and IT recruiters visiting the campus. The college prepares students for placements in the form of mock interviews, internships, and training. It requires students to maintain good CGPA to appear for placements. Some of the top recruiters on the campus include Google, Adobe, Amazon, Lenovo, Microsoft, Oracle, and others.

The average salary range offered by the companies on campus placements is about Rs. 8 lakhs to Rs. 75 lakhs per annum. The alumni network of the institution is good and it helps in getting job referrals and project works. The college also helps to get internships with a good stipend.

The hostel facilities offered by the college are good, clean, and well-maintained. There are a few old hostel buildings apart from the new mega hostels, but they have been maintained with a bit of renovation. For a fresher, the hostel room will be four- sharing. In the final year, you get to have single rooms. The hostel fees are quite feasible and it includes maintenance and food.

They have Wi-Fi and gymnasium facilities. It provides good vegetarian and non-vegetarian food options. The majority of the students prefer to stay in hostels on the campus and hence paying guest accommodations are sparingly available.

The college boasts of good infrastructure with spacious classrooms equipped with audio-visual aids for smart learning. The laboratories are good and well-equipped too, however feels a little crowded for the Electrical Engineering branch. There is a campus-wide Wi-Fi facility. There is a huge library with all the essential textbooks and reference books along with a digital library facility.

It has good sports facilities within the campus for basketball, swimming, football, tennis, badminton, and others. There is also an open-air auditorium that hosts several events throughout the year. There are canteens and kiosks on the campus and it provides good food and beverages and is easy on the pocket too. The college also has a dedicated health care center for the well being of the students.

I would like to say that National Institute of Technology, Calicut has a pleasant campus with a good environment for studying. The campus hosts students from various parts of the country and brings together a plethora of culture and traditions. It is easily accessible by train or flight and has all essential amenities closer by. There is no discrimination on the campus regarding religion, region, or economic status. The gender ratio varies a lot between various departments. The seniors are co-operative and friendly and helpful in having a great time at the campus.

The technical fest, Thathva that takes place on the campus showcases some of the latest advancements in the field and also innovative concepts prepared by the students. The institution also hosts inter-college competitions for cultural events. It has active clubs for students to take part including debate clubs, club mathematica, aero unwired, art club, music club, quiz club, and others. There will also be literature week, technical week, and other events to let students explore their talents beyond academics. Students are also encouraged to take up entrepreneurship with their start-ups and college helps in getting financial and organizational help for it. The college hosts IEEE and Robot interest workshops for the enthusiasts. There is a special cell for students in the college funded by the MHRD to enhance innovations in technology.
