B.Sc in Chemistry from Sammilani Mahavidyalaya

For my overall review of the experience at the Sammilani Mahavidyalaya, Kolkata I'll use the word satisfactory. The fact that made me choose this college was, it is closest to my house. The college is very close to its nearest train station. So, if anyone is traveling by train then this college is pretty convenient for them. Also, the bus station is just a foot away too.

I chose the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry because whenever at school I had my chemistry practical class, I was fascinated about it. To me it felt like magic. I made up my mind right then that, I will pursue my carrier in this field. The eligibility criterion at this college is pretty easy and straightforward. If a student has a minimum of 75% marks then he/she will get a direct admission in their desired course. The university decides when the exams will be conducted and thus, the college oblige. But exams are pretty frequent, say twice a year. The academics only prepare for the exams and not for real life challenges.

Fee is always different in each semester. At first semester, only Rs. 3,000 rupees. But each semester it increases Rs. 1,000. Admission fee was taken only at 1st semester which wasn't included in the semester fee and was Rs. 600. Registration fee was Rs. 500 for each semester aside from the total semester fees. There were no special discounts in fees for any specific category students. Scholarships or financial aid were also not given to any student.

The faculty members teaching my course were pretty average. Most of the faculty members had their PhD done. Even though none was from very prestigious colleges or universities. Only one method was used to teach us that was by using blackboard. There were no projectors in this college so, no chance for PPT presentation. Although teachers used to talk about group discussions but my batch didn’t have any. There doubt solving skills were also average. The teacher student ratio was good. Being a college from a sub-urban area it didn't receive many students. The faculty members were indeed approachable but were no that beneficial for any personal issue student faced. We did bond but only through fun and that is without the academics.

There was no placement cell in Sammilani Mahavidyalaya, Kolkata. Students had to look for companies on their own.

The college does not offer any kind of residential facilities. Any student living far from the college has to look for hostels on their own outside the college.

The campus had different classrooms for different courses. Each course had three different classrooms each. All departments had laboratories assigned to them as needed. Hence, the total campus size was pretty big. Campus includes the parking spot, playground, and the canteen. The college locality is pretty crowded, a shopping mall being right next to it. The classrooms were medium to large in size. With smallest one having capacity of 70 students. Larger ones had gallery. But only one classroom had AV aid in the whole campus that is 1 projector and a sound system for the whole campus. The library was quite big but had mostly non syllabus books. More syllabus books should be included in the library. For seminar purposes, big classrooms were used. My favorite thing about the college was a flower tree just outside the chemistry lab’s window.

My campus life was average if not bad. Student council elections were held annually. The council members used to organize the annual fest and fresher’s party. Other than these there were no events or extracurricular activities in the college.
