FIEM Kolkata: Admission Process and More

Being a second year student, I have almost passed two years in Future Institute of Engineering and Management, and now I am in my 4th semester. Speaking of an overall experience, I have found it to be average. The faculty here is a 50-50, by which I mean though the faculty here is quite knowledgeable, but they lack the skills of teaching, but few do for sure. The institute does provide you opportunities to prove yourself through several important competitions but at the end of the day it does depends on you. There are great hangout spots too that balances the stiff environment inside the institute with enjoyment. If we talk about what made me choose this institute, I did have this institute through my WBJEE list of institutes. I did part of my research by reading quite many reviews and even talking to pass outs from this institute, which gave me an idea it is well an average institute based on my WBJEE rank, and hence I kept it on my list. I will not really say there is anything too much special about this institute which differentiates it from others, though they take the attendance part quite strictly, sometimes even more strictly than other institutes.

So, I have chosen the course of Information Technology from B.Tech, which personally did interest me. I will be honest with you; I wanted something different from Computer Science department, yet a bit similar to it too. So, while looking out for other departments, I found Information Technology, and this enhanced my interest and hence I chose it. Speaking of entry requirements, you need to get through either by getting a rank in WBJEE or JEE, or you can even get through directly, but that does needs to give an extra cost. Now, a good mark in ICSE and ISC is also needed for the admission at Future Institute of Engineering and Management. The admission process of institute is not very tedious though. You just need to go through a few steps, like submitting a few needed documents which you will have to know from the authority and go on a particular date provided. As per my course, there are two exams in one year that is a semester exam for each semester. But there are 4 CA exams (internal exams) in each semester giving a gap of 15 days to maximum one month. I feel that if I take the knowledge and skills provided in academics seriously, it does help to prepare for real life challenges.

The fees for my chosen course over the duration of 4 years are Rs 4,07,000. This amount is divided unevenly through the 4 years. The amount for the first sem is the highest, that is Rs. 70,000 (since it includes the semester fees and also the tuition fees), but later in the semesters, the fees tends down to Rs. 47,000, Rs. 49,000, and Rs. 52,000, depending on each semester. Also they mention a separate date which is usually in the month of December or June to pay the fees; they also let you extend the date, at least more than one month than the given date. Speaking of discounts, well there is not any mentioned discount, but there is scholarship - for maintaining which you do need to pass at the semester exams. One particular scholarship which most of the students take is the SVIMS scholarship, which is quite helpful for the students.

Most of the faculty members are really knowledgeable and are quite much qualified for their deserving. Some faculty members are really good and know how to interact with the students, making the 2 hour long classes entertaining, whereas few are honestly not that good at their job. Talking about the background of the faculty members, they are honestly qualified enough and few are even much highly qualified for their post. The teachers usually teach through blackboards which according to me is actually the best method for an average of 60 students in one class. Although some even teach through ppts and smart TV, though not everyone. I will be absolutely honest; the faculty teachers are usually quite good in problem solving and doubt clearing. Talking about teacher student ratio, I would like to tell about my departmental which is 1:16 in terms of teacher to student ratio. My experience with faculty members is pretty mixed. Being the CR of my institute and someone who usually needs to stay in contact with the teachers a lot, I usually find most of them approachable and really Frank to converse with. Well exceptions are everywhere and 1-2 are here also.

We do have a Placement cell at Future Institute of Engineering and Management which is quite well managed. Though I have not personally interacted with it, being a second year student but I have heard quite lot from the seniors, and they do agree that placement cell does holds seminars and even arrange seminar from other companies, which does help in increasing the knowledge about placements. The Placement cell usually take mock tests which I believe is pretty important in this field. Also they arrange for a few important discussions and seminars. I see quite a few seminars, project competitions and mock tests taking place which later on help in placements. Also, though not many but quite a few company surely come for on campus placements. Companies like Cognizant, TCS, Mindtree, etc. come every year to hire students from on campus placements. The average packages ranges within Rs. 4,00,000 – Rs. 5,00,000 LPA which does depends on our skills, knowledge and grade though. And as far I have heard the recent highest package are 9 LPA and a bit more. I am a second year student so I am not yet placed.

Well I personally don't live in a hostel, so I don't have personal experience. But as far I have heard from my friends, I will share my knowledge. So, the institute exactly doesn't provide residential facilities, but there are several mess, PGs and hostels surrounding the institute which provide needed places to stay. I really don't have particular knowledge about the fees, but I know it's quite affordable and in variety of ranges.

The campus size of Future Institute of Engineering and Management is not quite large, just enough to be a good campus. There are 3 main buildings – one for BBA, MBA building (also media science), & B.Tech building and one for BCA, MCA, and one for Hotel Management. There is also a big ground (not much big though) and of course a canteen. About the classrooms, there are several classrooms obviously and they range from big to medium sizes, holding at least 60 students in each class. There is a library (pretty good, well air conditioned and a nice quiet place for concentration), there are labs which I will say are pretty furnished with needed equipment, though 1-2 equipment might not be working fine. Talking about sports, well Future Institute of Engineering and Management might not support that much, but there are institute teams which are pretty active. In case of security, there are security guards and care takers at every corners which honestly is really an important part. Well talking about my favorite place I will say the Verandah corridor, outside my class; I have gossiped and had really good fun there with my friends. Well for me being a student of Information Technology, labs are really important, and the computer systems, in that case, honestly they are good and workable.

The campus life of Future Institute of Engineering and Management is not bad, like at most days average, but on few days it is really fun. I am someone who interacts a lot and is quite social while in institute. So for me, it is fun having friends and enjoying my free time with them. The institute crowd is quite high I must say and these days especially due to the matter of high attendance, institute is floating with students. Speaking about clubs, there are five different clubs in Future Institute of Engineering and Management - Culrav (cultural club), Xplorica (Technical Club), Estrella (Film Club), Sportivo (sports Club) and GDSC (Google developers club). Each club provides a different element and is quite fun to work on as members. I am personally a part of Culrav club, and though at times we do have to work for fests and all, it’s quite fun to bond with the seniors and juniors. Talking about fests, there are several fests organized by all of the clubs, though the main among them are Flames (organized by Culrav) and Phoenix (organized by Xplorica). Many institutes participate in these fests and a lot of talented guests perform here. The fun is crazy! Personally I would say I like the campus life of Future Institute of Engineering and Management, with friends having fun between classes and quality bonding time, it is quite an enjoyment.
