Civil Engineering at IIT Kharagpur

I have been studying in this institute since 2023. It has been an overall pleasant experience since then with difficulties making your life interesting to live. It is the culture of the students in the institute, which cannot be found in other institutes that we can live alone but only can survive if together. The extracurricular activities help you to associate yourself with this large family. I chose to study in the institute due to its reputation as one of the best in the country in terms of academics and placements.

I am currently a second year undergraduate student of the department of Civil Engineering enrolled in its Bachelor of Technology course. I have a profound interest in the field of Civil Engineering since my childhood and thus the motive. It has a good future for me in the form of jobs at Public Sector Units and Government Services. I had to qualify for Joint Entrance Examinations Advanced through Main examination by securing at least around 90 percentile. my score was 99.66 percentile in the Advanced examination. I secured an All India Rank of 6578 to qualify for the course. There is no other criterion for the course. The admission is done through Joint Seat Allocation (JoSAA) process online. Exams are held quite frequently and the course is sufficiently aligned for preparing me to tackle real world problems.

Semester wise: Tuition fee is around Rs. 1,00,000, Mess fee is around Rs. 14500, Hostel charges are around Rs. 5000 (including all types of hostel facilities), and another Rs. 30000 for the overall institute facilities. Students belonging to SC/ST categories or of very low family income get full tuition fee waiver. Students belonging to low income categories get 2/3 of tuition fee waiver. Scholarships of merit-cum-means types are available in plenty.

The faculty members who teach us the various subjects in the course are quite well qualified in their field of expertise. They deliver their lectures with the aid of PPTs, rarely through blackboards and more through pen and paper. The faculty helps me to clear all my doubts related to problem solved quite efficiently. The faculty student ratio is around 1:30. I have a great time while clearing my doubts or just sitting in the class, as the faculties are friendly.

There exists a placement cell responsible for the placements of the students in IIT KGP. The members of the cell reach out to the companies to arrive at the campus for recruiting the students. The placement drive on campus is called CDC: Career Development Centre, which is responsible for the same. Companies like Google, Microsoft, American Express, Adobe, and Boeing among many others visit the institute for recruitment. Average package stands at Rs.23.93 Lakh per annum and highest is between 2 to 3 Crore per annum.

IIT KGP has made it mandatory for the students to reside in the hostels present in the campus. Number of hostels are 23 in the campus and students are randomly shuffled into single, double and triple accommodation rooms. Hostels are separate for boys and girls. There are no in and out timings from the hostels or even the campus. Hostel fees as mentioned including all facilities and mess is around Rs. 20,000 per semester. The quality, taste and hygiene of the mess food is quite level which can be described as good. I personally enjoy my stay in the hostel, as there are good recreational facilities like Table Tennis, Foosball, and Gym. Canteens are present in all hostels and outside the hostels are present many restaurants.

There are three academic blocks in the campus alongside the various departments spread across a walled fraction of the 2300 acres campus situated in the town of Kharagpur and 120 kilometers away from Kolkata. The old complex is maintained well with Library and various Seminar Halls, Auditorium and Conference Halls. Facilities are maintained well, kept clean, and regularly occupied with events held so frequently. There is another complex with huge laboratories. The most important complex has many huge classrooms with seating capacities exceeding 200 people. A hospital takes care of the medical needs of the students. Security is maintained 24/7. I love to cycle along the cycling paths, which are laid from the hostels to the classroom complex. The facilities help us to be regular to classes and provide us with a comfortable learning and developing experience.

I am able to experience the campus life as expected from my imagination before coming to the campus, if not for the slightly heavy burden of academics. The institute houses 1800 students of my batch itself. I enjoy mixing up with people of all types and make every moment, a memory to remember. There are many student run clubs, societies and cells. Many extracurricular activities, events, and fests are organized by the institute to foster unity and let the students to come out of their rooms, mix up and have fun to chill out of the academic burden and recharge their system with some positive vibes. Fests like ‘Kshitij’ and Spring Fest is held every year in the month of January along with departmental fests in the month of March. I am a part of one society within the many present in the campus where I get to learn many things and make good connections and memories.
