SBC Mumbai: A Premier Institute for Aspiring Journalists

As someone who comes from a background of commerce, to them Journalism Institute was a whole new environment. SBC was an Institute that provided me a comfortable experience especially when I was new in Mumbai city. I considered this as an ideal Institute due to the focus on practical knowledge, photography classes and film division tours. The Institute was restricted to a certain number of admissions. The professors could help out students briefly rather than getting distracted in a huge pool of individuals. This factor made me consider the Institute for future aspect.

As I was new in the world of Journalism and choosing Mass Communication course at School of Broadcasting and Communication was the ideal decision. This course gave a brief idea of basic media studies. An individual who has completed bachelors can only pursue masters in Mass Communication. If someone graduated from Journalism background, then they have higher chances of selection. Courses are categorized in three departments which are communication, Journalism and advertising. Online application form is available that can be filled out for admission as per department chosen. In terms of the process of examination, they happen every semester i.e. 8 times throughout your course. As we get to indulge in practical knowledge, academic papers always have a section prepared where one has to answer on the basis of situation.

The fees of masters in Mass Communication course at School of Broadcasting and Communication is Rs. 2,80,000 which is Rs. 70,000 per semester. The fees of any individual with certificate and scholarship will be Rs. 35,000.

As per the experience with faculty members at School of Broadcasting and Communication, they provide a brief about of the course. They try to relate every information with the real life situation for better understanding. Professors are either graduates from Makhanlal Chaturvedi University or have been a part of faculty from Institutes like NMIMS. Group discussion has been considered along with PPT’s for engagement purpose. The abilities of faculty members to adjust teaching pattern as per students interest, makes it easier for them to ask any issues. The teacher student ratio is 1:2, where a student can reach out a professor easily. Faculty members make it comfortable for students by asking their personal experience while sustaining in new city. The Institute also has an educational counselor that makes it more approachable for students.

School of Broadcasting and Communication is approached by companies like Balaji telefilms, Jio, and various PR firms. Placements happen at the end of 2nd and 4th semester. The average packages offered are Rs. 3,50,000 while the highest has been Rs. 10,00,000.

School of Broadcasting and Communication provides an in house broker who guides in showing PG or flats with a quality space.

SBC owns a 2-storeyed building where the ground floor has reception, cabins of all faculty members. It is located in a society of Andheri west with other media hubs. The seating capacity is for 40 students with AC’s installed in every classroom. A major section is given to auditorium. On the left side there is library and in the front there is a Canteen area. Ground floor also has a brief area for students who can sit and relax. This area was particularly my favorite. Transport is easily accessible with autos and metro.

I believe my campus life in SBC was very engaging due to fests & tours to famous film locations. There used to be an event called UTSAV which has been a major highlight as it’s a 2 day festival where every student gets involved through the participation. Passes were given for the invitation to outsiders. With classes like photography, we would get assignments that involved covering events like Kala Ghoda, fan fests and many more. Trekking activities are also planned by Institute after monsoons.
