MVSREC Hyderabad: Success Stories and Opportunities

The college is situated in the Badangpet locality of Nadergul in Hyderabad, in the backdrop of a rural/semi-urban landscape. The college is run by the Matrusri Educational Society, which also runs its sister college- Matrusri Engineering College in Saidabad. The college shifted to its present campus in 2001, prior to which it was present in lieu of the present-day Matrusri Engineering College. I happened to opt for the college on the basis of- its proximity to my home, reputation, ease of accessibility and score in TS EAMCET. My first year of college was entirely held online, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thereafter, the classes shifted offline for the remainder of the program. While I didn't really enjoy my college life, partly due to my introverted nature. Most students share similar views. While, the college is definitely better than most engineering colleges in the city affiliated to Osmania University.

I enrolled in the Bachelor of Civil Engineering program, since I was highly averse to joining CSE/IT related streams, which are an anathema to me. Admissions to MVSREC Hyderabad are fairly easy to secure, and can be achieved either through scoring well in the TS-EAMCET to get a seat via the conveyor quota, or by a seat in the management quota by paying the requisite fees. Examinations are invariably held twice in a semester- mid-semester exams and end-semester exams. These are followed by the final external examination. Some faculty members might include occasional quizzes or slip tests as per their pedagogical approach. Rest assured, the academics fail to prepare one for real-life challenges in most cases.

The highest fee payable for a candidate from the General category, who isn't a beneficiary of any government subsidies or scholarships would be Rs. 1,27,000/- per annum. Students who wish to avail college transport might do so by paying an amount of Rs. 27,000 per annum. While on paper, scholarships are made available for students from deprived sections of society. They often get changed on time. They get their degree after a long time of their graduation. Since original certificates of grade X & grade XII are held by the college as a surety for paying the entire course fee.

While the faculty members are well-qualified, with many of them having been with the college since its inception. The vast majority of them are second-rate and their pedagogical methods are average. Most lecturers are M.Tech degree holders from local engineering colleges. A few go on to complete their doctorates, yet again from state universities of mediocre reputation. The teaching takes place primarily via blackboards and PPTs. The lecturers seem to be well-versed with the subject at hand. The class strength if generally 60, with a number of sections for each branch. In my personal experience, a handful are genuinely helpful and caring and a few are not.

Yes, there does exist a placement cell in my college, however it is an open secret that it caters specifically to the needs of students belonging to CSE, IT and allied branches. Students belonging to other departments get placed. The college has tied-up with training firm called Suntek to impart job-oriented training to the students of the college. In my knowledge, the best placement offered to a student of my batch was about Rs. 15 LPA.

Yes, the college does offer residential facilities, in collaboration with private hostels. The college doesn't operate these hostels. While, I was never a hosteller. Generally, students from the adjoining districts with poor financial backgrounds stay in the hostels. Girls and Boys are allocated with separate hostel buildings in close proximity to the college campus. The Hostel rules and timings aren't very difficult.

The campus has separate blocks for most departments. However a couple of departments share a block. The campus isn't large, neither however nor too small either. The library is average. The labs are equipped and maintained. The canteen is the best part of the college and pure vegetarian food is served to the students, making it inclusive for everyone to dine. Overall, the college infrastructure isn't particularly great but we can say its average.

The overall campus life was quite monotonous. While the college crowd is quite cheerful and very friendly at most instances. There are hardly any clubs to reckon, even if any, are the sole preserve of a selected few. College fests are periodically held. I never enjoyed a single fest, more so because all buses were stalled for a while until the fest is concluded. In a nutshell, MVSR was not my best decision but the educational journey here has been good.
