Kishinchand Chellaram College BJMC Review By Tushar Sharma

Mumbai University has many top colleges and Church Gate definitely some of the best in class with HR, Jai Hind College and others. Though I lived in suburb I wanted to do my college from town and that is how I went to Kishinchand Chellaram College. BMM course was my preferred as my friends have done this course and I looked up to them as mentors as they are cool and smart and I needed both those quotients in my personality too. KC college do students grooming in the best possible way and one way in which they make the students smart is getting the best crowd of the city to their doorsteps. One can argue that with Jai Hind college but KC too had one of the best crowds of Mumbai. One thing that college has taught us is that no Boolean celebrations as we should remain in control of ourselves and we should be self-aware above anything else. I went to KC college when the college was at its prime and the course BMM is preferred by students. So, at prime when the competition was high, the stakes were high, I got everything I desired for from KC College.

Well, I thought I would learn journalism from the word go but no BMM is not about journalism as there are many other quotients attached to it and creativity on the whole is what we were taught. Classes were compulsory and projects were even more compulsory. Among all the courses of the college, BMM is the fastest of them all because the course ended with blink of an eye. We learned aspects of acting, dancing, print media, digital PR, and of course the journalism. The course is an overview of many and therefore one has to do PG in their respective domain to gain complete knowledge as BMM course is a bit of everything.

The number of faculties for our course were 12-14 as some remained constant and every semester some new faces came in. Every faculty member was an expert and they never tried to impose themselves on us and rather went quite easy on us as they have laid the foundation and we were asked to build on it. Media industry is a fickle thing as the career in it may last or may not last long but till it lasts how to make the most of it was the biggest learning that our faculty gave us.

Placements were average as 50% of the students had jobs through campus but 100% students were eligible for interviews. The trainee or the intern jobs were offered at a salary of 15-20k. Well, in Mumbai these figures count for noting because in media business we might have to spend over that to get whistle blowers and freelancers team to gather information. My elective was always sports and because no such exposure in that field was provided, I failed to impress the recruiters and missed out on placements. However, the old adage that whatever happens, happens for a reason is true because life had plan even better things for me.

Apart from Sydenham College, no other colleges in our area had hostel facilities. There were quite a few private boys hostel in town and students used to stay there because renting an apartment or finding a PG in Church Gate means spending more than what we could earn in two to three years of jobs. So, the ideal choice for outsiders is to either take admissions in some colleges of the suburb, or try for private hostels in town.

The college was not that big but the newly built building beside the lawn had a beautiful auditorium where most of our events and formal classes happened. There was a small studio within the college and only BMM students had access to that. The classes at KC have turned air-conditioned and the new block is fully air-conditioned. There’s a small lawn and a basketball court inside the premises. That’s it on infrastructure part as that is all that the college has.

BMM course meant having the time of our lives and what better way that to wake up and come to this beautiful college. Classes were over by noon but projects, and researches meant I took the local back home after 9 pm on most occasions. Much to my delight, my parents were ok with it as they knew that I will be doing anything but not ignoring the studies. Well, there were a lot of immediate distractions though as from a guy living in suburb watching people from town making major half of the crowd. It was my mistake though to get distracted because the college considers everyone equal and provided each one of us the same platform to showcase our skills at the events and seminars.
