Reasons to Choose ECE at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad

For me, I have just completed my first semester here and starting to fall in love with my institute. The rain and the red color of ISM combine to probably give the best view. Not very big campus but still it seems largest when you are running late for the labs and classes. RD, Mehzban, Dominos, Barista are there to address the food craving monster inside you. Some best lab facilities, I2H, NVCTI, and clubs give you that IIT experience. I wanted to choose ECE branch in a good IIT and Dhanbad being almost 100years old, having such a rich heritage stood first. Top notch labs, really experienced and supportive faculties, and less academic load allowing students to focus on more valuable skills and extracurricular activities are few factors which one could see to choose Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad. However our placements are not as good as Top7 IITs but still we have so much expertise in field of Mechanical, Mining, Petroleum and AGP/AGL that at times we can outsmart those institutes as well in these fields.

I chose ECE branch at Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad and motive for the same was to get into a top branch like ECE, CSE, EE, etc. After coming here I realize I have made the right decision as ECE as a branch is challenging which maintains the spice in life. Also one can easily explore the software fields as everyone else is doing same and ECE helps you to explore the Hardware part so at the end you have good expertise in software and hardware both. Eligibility criteria is simple i.e. you need to qualify JEE Advanced exam and you must clear that cut off rank in JOSAA counseling. Admission happens through JOSAA counseling only and you need to physically report at the institute once counseling is done to get the hostels, etc. There is very less load of academics. We need to take up two quizzes, mid semester exams, end-semester exams in a semester. Maybe assignments too sometimes if professor gives. These quizzes, exams, practical, etc. sets you to some other level and exams or any other kind of pressure is no longer worrisome.

For the first semester I need to pay Rs. 1,50,000 which includes Rs. 35,000 as JOSAA counseling fees. For 2nd semester I need to pay Rs. 1,20,000. This is total fees for a general candidate who includes Tuition fees, hostel and mess fees also the other charges. If you fall in appropriate category your Tuition fees will be waived off. As far as I know it is given to SC/ST, EWS, and OBC (NCL) students. Scholarship and financial aid is given only on the basis of this category and not on the basis of your academic performance.

Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad is about to complete 100 years in 2026 so one can imagine what it holds for students in terms of Faculty and Staff Members. But still the comparatively new faculties are not up to the mark but the core subject professors are top notch. Some of the professors we got in first semester have more than 30years of experience. Smart boards and projectors are there in the class for the teachers which help them to give the real time experience of the concepts. Professors know what they are teaching and after so much of experience one can observe that balance between theory, problem solving and practical application.

Being 10th best IIT the placement scenario is quite good. On campus placement and internships are easily available in top companies like Microsoft, Google, Samsung, JP Morgan, etc. Highest package offered in 2024 till now is 66lpa and average packages have been quite good for all the branches. Speaking for ECE it is one of the best performing branches with average package lying between 20to25lpa even during recession. Also there are quite good scope in core related companies of Petroleum, Mining, AGL, AGP, etc.

Hostel is provided by institute only after each year and after JOSAA counseling during 1st Semester. Amber Hostel is provided to 1st Year students, Aquamarine to 2nd & 3rd year and Jasper to 4th year students. Jasper and Amber are quite old hostels but still they are well maintained. Aquamarine has got 14 floors and is capable of accommodating 2000 students at one time. Even after being so large there is no issue like cleanliness and everything is well maintained. Each hostel has got Basketball Court, Volleyball Court, and Badminton Court and also there is playground for students to play in the evening or on the Sunday's. Hostel and mess fees are Rs. 18,000 per semester and there is no waiver for anyone. Personally hostel is the best place inside any institute where you hang-out with your best mates and you get to live with them.

Oh!! I can talk whole day about the beautiful red campus of Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad. After a century every corner of the institute holds endless of memories and with every round you take of institute you get to experience something new and that walk just settles you down to peace. There are different department buildings for each Branch and then there comes the massive Academic Building where Labs of many departments are present. NVCTI (I2H) and research building are the ones that give you that "IIT" feel. I won't say everything is perfect but those little bit of imperfections are what that brings the spice in institute life. RD, Mehzbaan, Barista, Main Canteen, Dominos and many more shops/canteens are there to meet your foodie in you.

Campus Life is really good. Decent food, good accommodation facilities and good teachers are the key to any peaceful institute life and Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad provides all of them very well. Students come here after qualifying JEE Advanced so the crowd here is really good. There are lot of clubs almost for everything i.e. for writing, Narration, Public Speaking, Poetry, Finance, Coding, Tech, Robotics, etc. There are lot of events and fests that keep on happening in the institute like Concetto, Srijan, Khanan, etc. Overall I am having a good time in campus.
