IIT KGP's Impressive Placement Achievements: A Record Year

IIT KGP is oldest and largest among all the IITs in India. It is ranked 6th in the NIRF rankings and 222nd globally by the QS rankings 2024-25. The institute offers excellent infrastructure, diverse academic programs, and numerous other opportunities to its students. The sports culture is also very exciting as students here are very passionate about sports. It has more than 35 active societies, clubs, and cells covering all the domains. Students with their respective interests can go in any society of their choice. It gives them a lot of exposure in life.

One needs to qualify both JEE Main and JEE Advanced in order to get admission in this prestigious institute's B.Tech course. Though you need to qualify both the exams but the branches are allotted based on JEE Advanced ranks only. B.Tech course has 8 semesters and each semester has 2 exams, i.e. mid-semester exams and end-semester exams. One can extend his/her course from 4 year to 5 year. At the end of 3rd year, the student can do Master’s or can even do specialization in interdisciplinary courses like Financial, Artificial Engineering etc. It also offers its students to do minor or micro- specialization in any course of their choice by completing certain number of required courses. There are numerous research opportunities available for the students. They can do research in any field of their choice, irrespective of their departments.

The tuition fee per semester is 1 Lakh. For SC/ST students, the tuition fee is waived off for the entire course and they are required to pay only hostel and mess fees. For students belonging to lower income family for OBC and General category are given 100% tuition fee concession if their family income is less than 1 LPA and 66% concession if the family income is less than 5 LPA. Many scholarships are also given based on academic performances and family's income background.

The faculty over here is highly qualified. They are on the best in the business. We are very fortunate to have been offered excellent faculties. The method of teaching varies from faculty to faculty. Some teach on blackboard using chalk and duster while some prefer PPTs. The faculty are very much research oriented and have an in depth knowledge of their subject. The professors are approachable and supportive, always encouraging students to excel academically and pursue research interests.

The placements at IIT KGP are one of the best in the country. There is a career development cell, which manages and conducts placements each year. This year, a record 1400+ placements were done within a very short span of time.

There are almost 28 hostels right now. Some more hostels are being constructed as of now. Hostels are called ‘Halls of Residences’. These hostels accommodate almost 17000 students. There are separate halls for girls and boys. Some new hostels have fully centralized ACs, while most of the hostels are very old. Old hostels' room conditions are not very nice and needs attention by the authorities. Other than that, each hostel has its own air-conditioned library, music room, game room, common room, badminton and basketball courts too. Each hostel has its own mess, general store, and many hostels have their own night canteen too.

The campus is spread across 2150 acres which makes it the 2nd largest institute in the country (After NDA Pune) and largest among all the IITs. The classes are conducted in the Nalanda Complex. It is a massive 4-storey building containing a lot number of classrooms. All the classrooms are air-conditioned and have AV system installed. Apart from this, the institute has a huge central library, Olympic size swimming pool, tennis, table tennis, badminton, squash courts. Football, hockey, cricket, and athletics grounds are also there. Institute also has 2 Hospitals and students are treated free of cost there.

The campus life is really amazing and vibrant over here. The best part is that there are no curfew timings for both boys and girls, so there is an amazing nightlife too. There are more than 35 clubs, cells and societies here, providing a wide range of exposure and opportunities. One can join any of these as per their interest. The institute conducts 3 fests annually: cultural fest ‘Spring Fest’, Techno-management fest ‘Kshitij’ and Sports fest ‘Shaurya. Inter IIT competitions, General Championship and open IIT competitions make the life even more interesting.
