Mata Sundri College for Women B.Com Review By Suman Pahwa

I passed out in 2014 but memories are still fresh as Mata Sundri College was less of a women’s and more of a Punjabi College. Every semester that I spent there I got to see some really nice faculties. Now, Delhi colleges are known more for their societies and it’s been 8 years since I passed out but I still know my society well. Invictus which was our departmental society of Commerce. The dance society was called Kaira and then there were Gidha and Bhangra Societies too. I was a part of many societies and had a lot of fun through them. At MSCW, we had a lot of freedom as attendance was never an issue here. While studying here, there was no pressure at all which is imparted in other DU colleges. Now the disclaimer that when you are doing well yourself, nothing can stop you even if you are not at the top college of DU.

Well, academically the college is quite bright as MSCW has always had toppers in line. At least in commerce, we did have university toppers. Well, there were some problems though as the classrooms had ACs but they were hardly switched on. The bench and desk were used since primitive times and I think the time has come to change that. I don’t know whether they are changed now or not but they should be. In our time, the pigeons used to create a lot of chaos as they used to make too much sound outside the classrooms all day long. So, the environment might not be that conducive but the way we were taught and made prepared for the exams was fantastic.

Well in all six semesters and if I chuck our 3 or 4 who kept teaching us the subjects like accountancy and stats in all semesters, we had a new set of faculties almost every semester. I loved how they took care of every student personally. Having one on one conversations after the classes as the professors took extra care of the toppers but even the backbenchers weren’t totally ignored. It was a pity that faculties didn’t get their due because the college has had toppers means the ones who should be credited the most are the faculties. It’s like players getting all the rewards and the coach is being ignored. Nevertheless, they hardly cared as they believed in doing their things.

Well, if the college says or anyone says that the placements were good then God forgive them for their lies. There were no placements at least in our time as no companies came. Yes, we were assisted with off-campus placements and DU students can anyways find jobs but the college certainly had no role in it. I have interacted with some current students and they have said that companies have started pouring in and also offering jobs to students. I still doubt though because the job scenario in India is such that now if one doesn’t have a dual degree means they can have an average job but certainly not a smiling job.

The college doesn’t have any hostel as many girls from Punjab come here and study. The college anyways couldn’t have a hostel on its premises as the area is relatively small. The college doesn’t want to risk it as running a girl’s college in Delhi is anyways an uphill task and then giving them a secure environment is even tougher.

I will begin this section by describing the beautiful Gurudwara that our campus had. The Gurudwara was small but was so beautiful and perhaps the best area of the college. The building is old but was maintained from the outside. The auditorium of the college is huge and the library which was digitized in 2013 saw ACs being installed, luckily the ACs were on for most of the time. I don’t understand why they left the classes like that. The benches are still the same who probably would have used them 20 years back. The classrooms still had blackboards in 2014 when smart classrooms were in existence. Lastly, the college also doesn’t have Wi-Fi facilities then but luckily it is there now.

If the societies were functional, they needed events to show what they have done the entire year. The dramatics and dance societies tool multiple auditions before selecting the students in the societies. We were taken to many prestigious colleges in Delhi including LSR and St. Stephens to perform. Multiple events happened on the campus and the best of the lot was Saarang which happened every April. The crowd was Sikh dominated as most girls were of the Sikh community here. One thing that stood out was that every religion was respected here and any comments against any religion were strictly addressed. The college has zero-tolerance against any such things.
