St. Xavier’s Kolkata Campus Facilities and Resources

My time at St. Xavier's College (Autonomous) Kolkata has been an incredibly enriching journey. While the academics are challenging as there are strict marking policies, the wisdom and knowledge gained from the professors compensate it, as all of them are mostly Ph.D holders. What sets Xavier's apart is the emphasis on extracurricular. With over 30 societies, here is something for everyone. I have been part of few of them myself, and being a part of college societies not only improves your soft skills but molds your personality as well. The college also provides excellent career guidance. The placement cell connects us with top firms where we can intern, which has been invaluable. Events like Xavotsav, Beyond Barriers make campus life incredibly vibrant. While the infrastructure might not be the newest, the college's rich history and prime location make up for it.

I chose B.Com (Hons) driven by a strong interest in accounting and finance. The program is offered twice in a day: morning starting from 6 am and ending at 9.50 am which is boys only and evening which starts from 4 pm and ends at 8 pm which is co-ed. Entry requirements are based on +2 marks, and the college releases a cut off list. Admission is very competitive but there are various quotas as well. Academically, the program is demanding with mid semester exams, semester exams and regular class seminars on Saturdays. This rigorous schedule prepares us well for the challenges of the professional world by fostering critical thinking skills and analytical skills. The curriculum is vast and extensive.

The fees structure increases in each academic year. Usually the fee is paid in 2 installments in each semester. The fees is high during IT(usually semester 3)

There are various departments in the college like Commerce Department for Morning, Arts and Science Department and Commerce And Management department for evening. Every Department has their own faculty members. Every faculty member has the best knowledge and teaching skills. There won’t be a day when you won’t be amused by the knowledge and expertise. Coming to the way of teaching, there are projectors in every classroom. When a theory part of a chapter is being taught, teachers explain it to us using a PPT, when numerical are taught teachers use blackboard for better understanding. The faculty members are very understanding and they help you solve your problems and doubts be it non academic as well. They are the real guides and bonding with them will give you exceptional clarity about your career. The best part about St. Xavier’s is its faculty.

The Xavier’s Kolkata campus is huge. The school building is connected with the college building. The buildings are painted with cream and dark green which makes it very beautiful. There are 15+ rooms in every floor, and there are 4 floors in total. Each floor has department rooms as well. There are labs in jubilee building. Lift is there, but it can be used by college faculty only. Our main auditorium is Fr. Depelchin Auditorium which has a seating capacity of 1500 students. There are 2 libraries which are in the other block which is 5 minutes walking distance from college. The library is just below the main building. The food is decent but the pricing is very low which makes it the best part. The ground is very big and regularl sports drills and matches are held. The St. Xavier’s Campus has strict institutional policies so you can’t enter the campus without your ID Card.

The campus life is enriching. There are a hundred things to do and with each activity and day you learn a lot. The college crowd is full of energy and you will never have a dull day. There are more than 30 societies in St. Xavier’s and you learn a lot from each society. I have been part of the Theatrical and Debate society. On a personal front, I have gained a lot of knowledge. There are a lot of events of different societies, Xavotsav, Beyond Barriers, Insignia being few of them. Each society has their own flagship event so it is pretty understandable that St. Xavier’s lays a strong emphasis on extracurricular as well. Overall, you will enjoy the campus life a lot and during events you will be on cloud 9!
