Choose Gauhati Commerce College for Commerce Degree

Gauhati Commerce College, commonly known as GCC, is one of the best Commerce colleges in Assam and among the top two most preferred colleges in Guwahati. Affiliated to Gauhati University, GCC offers B.Com and BBA courses at the undergraduate level and M.Com and MBA at the postgraduate level. I was a B.Com student from the 2013-2015 batches. What made me join this college is the curriculum, which was both educational and also catered to the students' needs who were interested in extra-curriculural activities. Another good part about this college was the faculty. Most of the faculty is Ph.D degree holders with excellent knowledge of their subjects. Furthermore, the location and vicinity is great with easy commute options available. The admission process is smooth and the fees structure is on the reasonable end as well. If you are planning to study in Guwahati and in the commerce stream, I would definitely recommend Gauhati Commerce College.

GCC admission is both entrance and merit based. BBA and MBA admission is based on entrance exams, whereas for admission in B.Com course, it is merit-based. The GCC cutoff for CBSE students was 90% and for state board students the cutoff was 75% for general category. However, they provide three waiting lists as well based on the seat availability and accordingly students are allocated the seats. I was a CBSE student and luckily, I scored 90.4% in the 12th. My experience regarding the admission procedure was good. You will be guided by the faculty accordingly at each stage once you are on the merit list. There are three specialization options available which are Accountancy, Finance and Marketing, which you need to select at the time of admission.

I will always be grateful for my faculty as I think of them now. As is the case with every student, we have our favorite and not-so-favorite professors. However, in GCC, it’s no different but you will get something to learn from each one of them. Our management teacher was my favorite. She was a gold medalist in management and the way she explained the topics, I remember it to date. During my final year, we were assigned project work where I got the opportunity to work with GGB sir. His guidance during the project has helped me survive in my workplace till date. Regarding faculty, Gauhati Commerce College has the best.

Regarding GCC placements, I have a mixed review to be honest. During our final year, we didn’t have any placement sessions organised. However, I was told by a few of my juniors that placements were held in the subsequent years and few well-known MNCs like Star Cement and Mahindra did visit our campus for placements. Moreover, I need to add a point here that most of my batch mates including me preferred higher studies for B.Com. Those friends who pursued M.Com in GCC were placed with good salaries after their post-graduation.

During my course of study, hostel facilities were only available for boys. GCC Boys Hostel, as it is called, was a two-Storey building with double and triple-sharing rooms situated adjacent to the campus. The girls’ hostel was under construction during that time. Regarding the hostel and mess facilities provided at that time, it was apt for the students. Students paid the hostel fees on a yearly basis.

Gauhati Commerce College is known for its academic building that faces one of the famous roads in Guwahati, RG Baruah Road. Being a GCCian every time I pass through the college, I am so grateful for my days here. Starting with classrooms, they are spacious and well-ventilated. There were no smart classrooms back then but now the classrooms are updated with digital boards and audio-visual facilities. We had a separate common room for boys and girls. Cleanliness was a priority, and it was evident. There were indoor game rooms and a playground as well.

GCC campus is huge. I cannot recollect the acres but there were four-five buildings and few were under construction. The academic block was beautiful, not to mention the heart of GCC, the auditorium. From seminars to events, everything was held in the auditorium. The canteen was a fun place to hang out during the recess hours with enough vegetarian and non-vegetarian options to munch on. However, the price of the food items was a bit high. There are many food joints, stationery shops, book shops within 500m radius. So, if you need something for your next class, it is just a few steps away. Overall, the campus was perfectly suited for students.
