ICFAI University B.Tech Review By Honey Vivian

When I went through the list of Colleges to join, I found ‘ICFAI’, which had undergraduate and post-graduate courses for those who have cleared their plus 12 examinations. Since, I scored a decent 82%, I could easily seek admission to this University without much hassle. I also felt excited to join a course in Dehradun. I wanted a change from the usual hustle and bustle of city life, and it felt nice to join a course in the quaint town. It was a journey that I was looking forward to and going through the curriculum made me feel confident that I could take on this course. I had a great time at ICFAI as knowing a new culture and meeting new people has always been my passion and at ICFAI, I had both of these experiences. The faculty was great too and their support for outsiders was immense because they made sure that outsiders should feel at home inside the campus.

I fancied taking B. Tech, as my parents laid down a condition that they will send me out only if I do engineering. Computers have always fascinated me and CS here was an interesting course that I thought would help me get an excellent job at a high-profile IT Company. Some esteemed people from the industry, graced as guest lecturers to give us insight into the actual workings of the court. The course study emphasized all the vital subjects that needed to be part of the engineering course and were diligently covered. While enrolling, the students do have to get through an interview though, it was just a formality. There is equal emphasis on the growth of the students they take on the courses.

Most of the faculty were proficient in law and various related subjects, as in our country, engineering is a comprehensive course. Hence, they were able to explain to us the nuances of the curriculum very well. It gave us the drive to understand, which often seemed a difficult course to study hard and understand well. The course, spanning over four years, didn’t seem sufficient as we had to read up on so much stuff; day-in and day-out to be proficient at handling all the programming languages, we had to understand and put forth our opinions.

ICFAI is not great for placements and hasn’t been so for a long time now. The students have to fend for themselves to get a good job in an IT firm of their desire, by working extremely hard and standing a meritorious record, to be able to stand out from the crowd and get selected when you apply by yourself elsewhere. You will get good recommendations from the College, but you will have to work on other things from your end to land the job you desire while studying this exhaustive course. The College needs to work on their placements, as this is a grey area of the College that needs to dye immediately.

The hostels were cheap and easy to find, so there wasn’t much hassle when I first came to the place to check-out a room to stay. The University doesn’t have its hostel facilities, and students have to do with nearby PG accommodations or the hostels that have a tie-up with the University. The University provides buses for the commute, and it helps to use this for an affordable sum collected from the students for using the transportation facility.

The College is indeed a bit old by now, yet it comprises only two-buildings on a small campus. However, this nondescript location makes it ideal for studying away from all distractions. However, changes are coming though, and construction for hostel on-premises is happening. You will also find a two-floor library that is useful for engineering students, who need several reference books for our course subjects. Buying all books wouldn’t economically work out for us. There is a small canteen to take care of our needs for food and snacks.

The campus may be small, but the students on the campus make the environment lively, as everyone mingled very well, and there was no such sense of competition and rivalry. I didn’t hear of any bullying, and the seniors were nice and welcoming towards us. It was a good atmosphere for us to grow, thrive, and learn. There weren’t as many activities as you may think. One yearly fest, usual farewells, and welcome sessions in which I wholeheartedly participated.
