Vellore Institute of Technology B.Des Review By Yara Juhana

I am currently a first year at B.Des Industrial Design and so far, I am done with my first semester. It was good and the subjects were apt to what we study. Since it is the foundation year, it was mostly basic design knowledge. The teachers were well informed about the subject despite coming from B.Tech backgrounds. I chose this institute as it was my first preference after NID, IITs mostly because of its high NIRF ranking and I knew a lot of people who studied here. The Design department is new at VIT as it started on 2018, but there has been a major development throughout the years as it are hiring faculties, if you want to opt for a institute, which teaches designing mostly on a technical perspective, VIT is a good option.

The faculties are good. They are all mostly from Vellore itself. You can find some faculties from other parts of India as well. The theory part is taught mostly like in school but the practical subject are really fun as we get the full freedom to experiment with the provided materials and ideate and work on the product from the porticos lab. There will be few books given to be read during the exam season and we will be asked questions based on our understanding of the design books.

The placements are okayish as I said since design school is still developing. Most of us apply by ourselves to the companies instead of going through the university. However, excellent training is given to us for sitting in placements as we have a subject just for preparation of placements.

The infrastructure is good. The design building especially is designed as in like a maze with multiple ways to enter the building. There is a library with plenty of study books, novels, and dictionaries available. There is also a lake inside the campus, which is a nice place to chill, and there are imac computer labs, recording studio inside design building. There is a place called foodies where you can chill and interact with your friends.

Campus life is great. There are fests held like Gravitas and Rivera. Gravitas is a tech fest, which last for about 10 days, and people put up food stalls, photo booths, games, and workshops. There will be mazes, laser light show, dancing and singing workshops put up during Gravitas. As for Rivera, it is a concert in which a major celebrity will show up, people from all over India can attend it, and it is mostly held during end of February.
