Indian Institute of Technology M.Tech Review By Mohammad Nasir

'IIT Kanpur' always goes hammer and toms with all the things they do. Be it education, placements, or campus life. IIT Kanpur has got a big ego and ego of delivering the best at the highest level. Also, in IITs, Kanpur ranks a little low but their formula of going toms and hammer doesn't stop. IIT Kanpur makes headlines and for all good reasons. Firstly, being the closest IIT to Delhi after IIT Delhi, and secondly because of 'Antaragini'. IIT Kanpur is difficult to keep quiet as once the academic sessions start, they will go bang bang on it and come the placements time, the newspaper headline will always have IIT Kanpur among the table toppers. The faculties were mind-blowing, and even after such stressful studies, the campus was full of energy. Students used to synchronize together as most studies were done in groups. Needless to say, that synchronization was required in events, too, as most of the club activities for which we did many off-campus projects and earned wealthy experience and some cash too, couldn't have been possible elsewhere. IIT Kanpur has thumbs up from all the leading rating agencies and the reasons for that are all the points that I will be sharing in my review.

Academics here are strong as in, lectures were important more than anything. However, keeping all your mind at the lecture was more than enough to get through because even at IIT, I started studying a week before the exams and had a CGPA of 8. You are mistaken if I am giving credit to myself. I am giving this credit to the Institute for making the lectures and practicals such that we had all the time after the lectures to lead a beautiful life at one of the most beautiful campuses of the country.

Engineers who have served in some of the top corporate and a teaching experience of at least a decade. The ratio was great as the faculties were many and in an Institute like IIT, having a teacher-to-student ratio of 1:7 is amazing. They were great as I enjoyed their teaching and the pep talks that they gave almost every week. I later came to know that some of our faculty have experience of talking in TedX. So, more than their teaching, their communication skills made me their bigger fan.

If faculty were great, then placements are the greatest. IITK campus invites around 200 companies to their campus every year. From the 3rd semester, soon after our internship, students were pumped up because the companies started coming. A positive testimonial from the internship was more than enough for the companies coming to give us an offer. For those who received offers less than 10 lakhs, I pity them because B. Tech students were getting that kind of placement. In our batch, the average was 9-10 LPA, but getting a placement of double the figure of average placement was easily possible. Many students got that, so placements, on the whole, are super awesome here.

There are five or maybe six boy's hostels which are named Hall 2 to 5 and 11 & 12. Hall 12 is the latest one and was allotted to only the PG students. We had the option of choosing Hall 2, which was available at one fourth the price of Hall 12 but when I saw that, it had to be shared with one more person, and the rooms hardly had any space to walk, so I booked the Hall 12. One thing common in all hostels is the lifestyle. Hall 12 rooms gave the feeling of paradise on earth. The rooms were spacious and were available on a single or sharing basis. There was one strange rule and that was we had to call our seniors 'Chachus'. There was one person who was the leader and we had to address him as 'Vidhayak Chacha'. Coming to the food, for breakfast we were served Indori Pohe, Jalebi, and for our South Indian friends some Idli's too. Lunch was normal, but dinner was exclusive as we were served Egg curry almost daily and for chicken lovers, the mess chicken curry was too yummy.

To describe a campus of over 1000 acres, 100-200 words won't be enough. There was an IITK incubation center at the campus which was backed by IBM and TCS. The busiest area of the campus was the computer center building. Secondly, some beautiful cafes soothed our taste buds with all the cravings that we had. We used to share our space with many birds and animals as there was a pristine forest cover in the campus. Thus, the health of the environment, which is quite polluted, felt none of it inside the campus.

All campuses in my books are good, if you make the most of them. At IITK, you get extra options, but at the end of the day, you can't be associated with more than one or two clubs. I was associated with the recycling society and worked whole-heartedly for them. The sewage water of the campus was treated and we used the same water for gardening the beautiful gardens of the campus. We students did that and trust me; I had a lot of fun doing that.
