Graphic Era University M.Tech Review By Sumit Negi

GEU is a landmark university in Dehradun as everyone targets that for studies. I had DIT University and UPES in my mind but GEU gave easy admissions and therefore it became a no-brainer to have a shot at M. Tech from there. I consider myself lucky though because not many students got placed from the university but among the ones who got placed, I was one. The management of the college is one of the politest you will ever see. Even the faculties would sugar coat and say things that you will never feel bad even if they scold you. So, it was like a sugar rush because studies went smooth, even the faculty and management as I said were smooth, but the placements. Everyone had to scratch their head because the intake was high and they ensured all that we will have placements like this or that but not even half of it was delivered.

Academics are tough here as classes started from 8.30 am and went on till 4 pm. There was 1 lunch break and one mini-break in between. Labs almost every other day, as M. Tech had more practical learning than just rote theory learning. Many companies have added their requirements in the course and that has benefitted the students a lot. I wish it helped in placements too but never mind as all the bases of good academic curriculum were covered under our course. If I don’t mince the words, the academic at GEU was as good as any other institutes in India.

Almost all PhD holders with enough experience in teaching. One issue that I had with them was that of attendance. One of my batch mates lost their parents and because of which, she couldn’t have the required attendance and the faculties imposed a fine on that too. No humanity was shown even in such sensitive matter and because of which even though they were quite good with teaching at least lost my respect. Most faculties encouraged students to have deeper pursuit of education as good education is the only thing that will last with them. So, whether I respect them or not is a different story but I had no problems with their teaching style as it was a quality one.

For placements, companies were invited in numbers and take no back as most of them needed students who were capable. B. Tech and M. Tech students were allowed to sit for the interviews for the same companies. Now this is where the trick was missed because even though we were more learned than them the companies didn’t wanted to spend high. They were getting B. Tech students at 3-4 LPA CTC while M. Tech students ask was over 5. In percentage terms 40% of the students were placed in top notch companies like Microsoft, Adobe, and Syska among many others. One needs to have a special skill set to get placed from here as internship project will matter a lot so try and do your best there. Those, who didn’t took internship seriously, the university or the companies didn’t saw them seriously either for placements. I have given you the code to crack a high-end job, so please do your bit.

Hostels of GEU were inside the campus but with such restrictions that I saw most students and even girl students were happy to stay beyond the campus. The area Clement Town where the college is has nearly 200 PGs for boys and girls. Every 4th or 5th shop is a mess and students will be seen having their meals there. For girls, they can’t go out without permissions and for boys the curfew time was 8 pm. Nobody can stay with such restriction in this era and college has adopted modern amenities in its campus but will have to broaden their horizon a bit when it comes to curfew times.

The university may not be that big as there are a lot of buildings and two gates to enter the campus. Our department building was close to gate number one. There is one huge central library at the campus and an auditorium to die for. There’s an open area for events and all the students can see it from the respective buildings. It has all the facilities but most important is that they are all well-maintained.

Life at GEU was fun without a doubt. I got to see the most amazing crowd and students busy with committees, societies, and events every now and then. There’s one surety about GEU that students will get plenty of chances to show all what they have got. M. Tech students schedule was so tight that it became impossible for me to join societies or participate in sports or annual cultural fest GRAFEST.
