BJB Autonomous College B.Sc Review By Jhanvi Jain

Orissa is a state with low literacy. The reason is not just the poverty but also that parents or the awareness towards education is less. Bhubaneshwar in that sense has transformed tremendously and today has become an education hub of the east. There are many top colleges and universities like Centurion University, Rama Devi University, Siksha 'O' Anusandhan University, and various Kalinga Institutes. BJB Autonomous College too has a good rapport and that was the reason I joined this college and travelled 30 odd kilometers daily as I am a resident of Cuttack. If I look back now, the college was disappointing. I came there as I thought college life will broaden my horizon but the college is too conservative and for girls it's even more. The college management staff and the teaching staff were rude as they feel shaming students is fun. Utterly disappointed not just with their behavior but also in the quality of education that is provided here.

I joined BJB Autonomous College for B.Sc, a course that’s not so green. Many people think of becoming engineers, CAs or Doctors but I always wanted to do B.Sc and people though I am not ambitious enough to go so far. To hell with them though, I joined this college but the course and the way studies happened over here, even I felt what is the need of wasting nearly two hours daily in travel. Thanks to our CM, who has made bus travel free for college students, otherwise I would have left the college mid-way.

Out of 10 faculties that we had only 3-4 were good. So, you calculate the ratio of good faculty at the college. The faculties had politics going on between them and favoritism which by the time we enter college feels like it’s a thing of the past. Well since the college has regressive approach, why do faculties be far behind. Also, many teachers came and went in between the semesters and what left was an utter mess. Some good faculties gave us hope but rest others drained all those hopes.

Sadly, our branch didn’t have any placements whatsoever. I thought it will be easier to find placements with this college’s degree but sorry that is also not the case. Some of my classmates are working in some travel agencies or mutual fund offices. B.Sc students with major in Microbiology doing such jobs and college still don’t care.

The college has hostel facilities and the girls' hostel was quite good actually. On days when we used to have events, students were allowed to stay at the hostels with their friends. This was allowed only in special cases though. The hostel had a lot of quotas for students of backward classes but this is because of the rules passed on by the state government. The hostel fees are unbeatable and that was the biggest beauty of the hostels of BJB Autonomous College.

The campus is huge as along with colleges, there’s also a school inside the campus. There are separate buildings for separate departments. The buildings are huge as the student strength in the college is also massive. The science block was also divided in two halves as B.Sc building was D1 which also nestled our department library and a canteen at the ground floor. The cultural program hall was enormous as nearly 1000 students were seated during college events. The college is named after one of the greatest freedom fighters of the state, Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar, and his statue is inbuilt inside the campus.

The campus is so big that one can get lost in it. From one end to the other, it took a while to travel. The sports ground and the garden at the backyard were the main places where we had our gatherings. We can’t enter the premises without proper uniform so the campus was strict as well. At campus, it’s not that we led a boring life but it wasn’t that happening too.
