Shyam Lal College B.A Review By Bhoomika Jasrotia

I am a second year of B.A Hons. (History) at Shyam Lal College, Delhi University. For a student like me, who is stepping in a new city without family, it may seem difficult to adjust in a big university's college but with some confidence one can really blend in the college life of Shyam Lal. At first when I got admission in this college through CUET, I wasn't sure if this would be something I was looking for but, the course I got, the teachers, the academic pattern all were up to the mark; even the staff was so cooperative. The college has different societies for different talents and activities, an acting society, dance society, music society, welfare society etc. Which really is necessary for a so many reasons. Recently, a Dandiya Night was conducted which was fun. Lectures from successful entrepreneurs, leaders, speakers also take place in the college hall; exhibitions, displays, competitions, debates etc. are held every month. I have completed one year here, and I can surely say that this college is quite good from other DU colleges as well. I will really miss this place after my graduation.

They have all the courses from, Sciences to Humanities. B.A Hons., B.A, B.Sc, B.Com, B.Com Hons., etc. My course is B.A Hons. (History) and anyone who wants to apply to this course can enroll via CUET preference list selection. Anyone who has completed 12th standard can enroll. My motive for enrolling into this course was to know more about Indian and the World's history, while preparing for Civil Examinations. Apart from the major core subjects that I study, there are other subjects too like AEC, which is the language subject; means one can opt for different languages and this should be changed every semester. Others are SEC, VAC, etc. which are also practical based subjects.

In the first year the course covered "ancient history" which was divided into three major core subjects, differentiated on the basis of periods of study. The first class was of Priyanka Thakur ma'am; she is totally my favorite teacher till now, as her way of teaching, talking, is just out of the box. The examples she gives, her humor, everything is just so best about her. Nishant sir, what an incredible teacher he is. He never ever read anything from any source, he used to just revise the topics which he was going to teach and when he used to come, with so much surety and confidence he used to state facts which were all right and apt. Currently, Rohan Mandal sir, Gayatri ma’am, they are teaching us medieval history. They are also excellent teachers according to me.

The campus is a green and has a vast area with two major buildings, termed as old building and new building. The old building has three floors, and the new building has two. There is a college hall, an amphitheater, many gardens, two big grounds, water coolers placed at almost every 20 steps, a big canteen with good food, library, reading room, etc.

Campus life overall is good and so is the crowd. Fests are conducted almost every month, whether it's Dandiya, Ganesh Pooja, Diwali, quiz competitions, dance competitions, fancy dress competitions, workshops of different interests, debates, etc. The college installs food stalls, game stalls, etc. for different events, book exhibitions, handmade exhibitions, and one can participate in any of these activities and events.
