SRM University Ramapuram B.Tech Review By Arvinth Kumar

SRM has both positives and negatives and it varies from person to person. I personally will be crediting SRM for my career growth. Ramapuram campus is pretty small, it doesn’t have any ground. The campus is of 10-12 buildings and in between we had couple of basketball court in which all the students play other sports like football, cricket etc. Faculties are pretty approachable and few of them have created a lifelong bond. But a very few of them are skilled enough to teach the students. None of my batch mates know how to use code book for Steel even during semester exams. For food, we have cafeteria and that good (but don’t compare it with main campus). Unlike other SRM campuses, Students need to wear formals as the campus is next to Easwari college, which is under the group of SRM and they wear formals.

Civil Engineering was fun to learn initially including the practicals. But as students need to attend internship after 2nd and 3rd year, we will be able to realize that what we learn inside the classroom and what is actually being practiced outside is completely different. My main motive behind enrolling into civil was to start a construction firm but which didn’t work out as there is proper lack of knowledge.

Faculties are good on papers but in reality it’s completely different. Even though the professors are approachable and friendly, most of them lack the teaching skills. They might be knowledgeable but it’s not reaching out to the students. All the faculties are having master’s degree. None of them had a Ph.D degree unlike to main campus.

Usually placements are common for all campuses and all students need to be at KTR campus for the placements. But the priority is definitely given to main campus students. Ramapuram campus too has a placement cell but the offers and jobs are pretty bad. 99% of them are BPO and Sales job with max package reaching 3 LPA. Apart from that, if you are not getting placed, placement cell pressurize you to give a letter stating, you have opted out of placements and is looking to take higher studies.

Hostel facilities are good to create friendships. But apart from that the food quality is not good. SRM good foods are the company who has taken up the catering. It’s always better to take a room outside and cook yourself as the food quality here is bad.

Classrooms are not air-conditioned. Except the CSE labs and auditoriums, most of them have fans. With Chennai’s temperature, you will have nightmares. Lab instruments are old and definitely need new ones. The college definitely needs to work on the infrastructure.

Campus life is usually very average. Only during weekends, there would be any club activities. As grounds are not available in the campus, sporting activities are a big problem. And even club activities are usually performed inside the classroom that might feel exciting initially but post that it’s boring. During that time, there weren’t any fests; all we had was technical symposium.
