Oriental College of Technology B.Tech Review By Nimisha Akolker

I choose this institution because I didn't scored good in JEE Mains entrance exam and my parents didn't allowed me to take drop so I had no option left other than a three tier college. So as far as I remember I scored around 75 percentile and as I am from general category I couldn't get any government college with top branches. So, I had to go for private college and this is one of the best private colleges in Bhopal. So, I decided to study here. If you are in the same situation as me, not scoring well in entrance exam and not being able to take drop as well go for this college.

I am enrolled in Bachelors of Technology in Information Technology branch. Our college is affiliated with RGPV University Bhopal. So, our syllabus is same as theirs. We have 8 semesters in the duration of 4 years. In the first two semesters we have five subjects in each semester. For the first semester, all the branches have the same syllabus. From second year, subjects are according to the chosen branch. In our Information Technology or simply IT branch we have most subjects like CSE branch. We had Energy and Environment studies (EEES), Digital Circuit and System, Discrete Structure, Data Structure and Algorithms, and Object Oriented Programming in the third semester. Now I am in fourth semester and we have Database Management System, Mathematics 3, Analog and Digital Communication, Analysis and Design Algorithm and Computer Architecture. In higher semesters we will have subjects like Operating Systems OS and other important subjects for placement.

The faculty of our college is very supportive and always asks students to come up and answer questions. So, the teachers ask questions in between lecture to check if students are understanding the topic or not. Also for some students like me who are shy, introvert or just not have enough confidence, when the faculty asks questions in front of entire class and we have to answer it. This really helped me to fight that fear of public speaking or stage fear. Speaking in front of crowd takes practice and courage and our teachers help us with that. Whenever doubts are asked in class, faculty solves it and everyone has a little group discussion on it.

First of all it's a tier three college, so don't expect much. My personal advice would be to not depend on the college and start your preparation from the first year or at least from second year, even if you enjoyed your entire first year making friends and exploring that new freedom which you just got away from home. Average package of our college is like 4 - 5 LPA that too is hard to get. You have to put in a serious amount of hard work. Be it practicing code or doing those projects, you will have to put in it all your efforts. Companies like TCS, Wipro, Capgemini, Infosys, etc. come to college. But, the placement is still not good as the percentage of students getting placed is something you need to worry about and put in your own efforts.

Yes, our college has hostel facilities. There are a total of three hostels in the campus itself. One boys’ hostel and two girls’ hostels. Rules and regulations are very strict. Seniors can't interact with fresher students due to anti ragging. Food is not that good but still its edible and what can you even expect from college. Cold drinking water is available on each floor. Wi-Fi facility is available for students. They can access Wi-Fi from their own room. There is gym and a little garden as well. Hostel life is fun with friends. Hygiene is well maintained in the hostel rooms and corridors.

There is main campus known as Oriental Institute of Science and Technology and our college Oriental College Of Technology then college of management and pharmacy. We have canteen in our college. Audi shop is also there. In the shop you can find all the necessary items for daily life such as stationary, dairy products, snacks, etc. We also have library where students can study till 8 pm.

Fests are organized once a year. There are various competitions for coding, hacking, or sports like cricket, volleyball, tennis, badminton, handball, etc. For DJ night, singers are invited but I don't like that as they just call any random singer whom nobody knows and she sings a few songs and goes back. Boys and girls are separated due to safety concerns. DJ night timing is till 10pm. College buses are sent to their regular stops for students during DJ night.
