Gauhati Commerce College B.Com Review By Nishan Thipura

According to my course i.e. Bachelor's in Commerce, it is a decent college. It offers a 3 years degree and you can also continue your masters or MBA from the same college but I would personally not recommend it. My reason for joining this college is to get a bachelor's degree while preparing for CA. If you have a bigger goal rather than settling for a job after the course then you can definitely opt for it.

The course which I am pursuing i.e. Bachelor's in Commerce is of 3 years and getting into it depends on the marks scored in your class 12. The college issues a cut off list and admission dates after you apply for the college in the college website. The admission process is easy and simple as compared to other colleges although you need to visit the college once for physical verification. As mentioned earlier, if your aim is for bigger goals such as pursuing professional degree such as CA or CS or going for UPSC or APSC which required a bachelor's degree then you can go for this course.

The faculties are moderate in term of teaching and are skilled enough. The main problem rises in the teaching pattern. They mainly focus on the exam oriented rather than concept oriented. It can be profitable for scoring good marks in the exam but all the basics is lost which might be a hinder in the future. All the teachers are mainly holding a master degree or Ph.D holders with enough experiences.

The placement condition particularly for my course is very poor. Only a small number of students are selected and most of them opt for higher studies or out campus jobs. If your aim is to get placed by enrolling then there is a small chance that you might be selected.

There is hostel facility for boys and the distance from college is less than a kilometre. For applying for hostel you will need to apply separately and there will be a selection process. Hostel life is filled with joy and friendship. The infrastructure is moderate. There are many extra activities for the hostel students.

The campus is quite big and comprises of a field for football, volleyball, etc. It also has its own gym where students can come and go in specific time. It also has a cafeteria where you can look for a quick snack during breaks. It also has an auditorium where there are functions and cultural program frequently held. There are also common rooms for both boys and girls. There is also a library of medium size where you will find a variety of books. The college comprises of four building, the MBA block, B.Com, HS block, library, the M.Com, and BBA block.

The campus life is moderately good. There are two functions you may look out for; the freshman party and annual college week. The freshman party is held after few months of the admission of new semester where there will be a cultural evening. The annual college week is sports and cultural event which goes for a week. The sports consist of football, cricket, volleyball, basketball, kho-kho, chess, and many other indoor and outdoor activities. Besides sports there are also competitions for singing and dancing. At the end of the week, an evening party is organised where multiple celebrities have performed.
