G H Patel College of Engineering & Technology B.Tech Review By Hitesh Mali

GH Patel College of Engineering and Technology has more negatives than positives and thank God, I am doing this review after 3 years of my passing out from this college. First of all, an ACPC rank of below 3k is required to get admission in GCET. If you need the best of students then at least get the best facilities and faculties. One other common problem that is associated with GTU students is that we are not provided any internship opportunities and if we fail to get campus placement, we hardly have anything in our CV other than the degree. The facilities and the placement numbers mentioned in the foyer are all fake and there are no placement criteria because all are trained to clear aptitude tests of Infy and imagine a chemical engineer getting placed in Infy because of that. Publicity stunt or gimmick is one thing in which college is arguably the best. Feedback forms regarding college are given and even after filling all the problems that we are facing nothing changes here. Why the hell then you waste our time. GCET College achieving top ranks is because of the brilliant students that they in-take. The in-take criteria is great as they take only the rankers and not many management quota seats are available for admission to this college.

Unfortunately, I have to write the truth and don’t know how to begin. If there were one or two mistakes I could have pointed them out. The labs are old and hardly have all the equipment required for mechanical studies. Classrooms fans didn’t work for 2 straight semesters and even after lodging complaints after complaints nothing changed. The college timings are till 5.30 and therefore all the classrooms and labs are locked by 5.15 so that students can end their already shit day early.

The most interesting section for reviewing is this. All the faculties are Ph.D. holders and therefore they don’t know how to teach the students. They talked to us as if we are also Ph.D. holders or their mates. Secondly, their English was so amazing that some NRI who unfortunately joined our college had to left the college mid-way. They are so obsessed with English that even if they speak a sentence in Gujarati or Hindi, they will add some words in English to make that sentence meaningless. No one was attentive in the class and why should we when the teachers don’t know how to teach and more importantly don’t know how to speak.

I don’t know what Infosys has seen in the college that they hire students from GCET like anything. We are prepared for their aptitude tests even though we were from mechanical but had no choice had to join the training. Nearly 50% students including all departments cleared the tests and more than half of them irrespective of the branch they were in, they were happily taken by Infosys. The very next day college spends thousands of bucks to advertise the same in every newspaper circulated in Gujarat. More and more students are attracted this way and apply for GCET as they feel they will be working at Infosys after doing engineering from here.

There are both boys and girls hostel inside the campus. From block A to E it’s the boy's hostel wings and from F to I, its girls hostel wings. The hostel rooms were sized and capable of accommodating 2 students easily. The rooms were furnished and also had attached bathrooms. Block A which was relatively cheaper had common bathrooms. The hostel food was so amazing that half of the time students tried food joints near the college because if we had consumed the hostel food for 4 years, we would have suffered from malnutrition.

Since the institute is old the buildings are off-colour. The kind of money they spend on ads they should spend some of it on the infrastructure as well. The labs are old and many essential instruments are not available. They will do practical application only of the instruments that are available and therefore many felt the labs are equipped but try putting your idea and ask for the management to rope those facilities and see what answer you get. I tried that and was denied entering the labs for 2 weeks. The library was so old but the books are not arranged in order and to search for the book you want it will take an hour. The only good part of the infrastructure was the location. You will get transport easily and near the campus, there was a market area and you will get all the required things at a walk able distance. The college has a gym that has outdated machines and playgrounds but again there are no proper cricket kits to play with.

The students were amazing and you will see students dedicated that they didn’t just rely on college to do them favours. Hence learning from students and exchanging ideas with them was huge fun. Luckily students were the ones who took care of the fest which was not budget constrain. The fest IMAZE was among one of the best you will see among Gujarat colleges. Students were allowed to invite their parents to the fest and performing in front of a crowd of 5000 people helped me overcome my stage fear. This was one of the only positives in my 4 years at GH Patel College.
