Mithibai College of Arts B.Com Review By Akhilesh Maurya

Mithibai College admissions are transparent and only a few are allowed through backdoors. The crowd of Mithibai does not only consist of riches but you will find people of all financial backgrounds here. Besides that, many students from other cities and states also study in this college because there is no discrimination. We relocated to Mumbai just a couple of years before and the Mumbai language was something which is widely spoken here, I didn’t even knew still I felt connected as not just the students but the teachers were welcoming too. The college may not be as fancy as the name and the rapport suggests but has all the required facilities and most importantly the facilities can be availed by anyone as there is no discrimination. The college hosts numerous extra-curricular activities and all are supported by the teachers and management. Even if you are weak in your studies you have a lot of other opportunities. If you are lucky enough or you perform well then there are chances that you may receive the award from a Bollywood actor as they are invited during the fests every year. Attendance is a little strict and that was one of the disadvantages if one wants to look it that way.

The college is affiliated with Mumbai University and the B. Com course was in line with the University but the college added an extra subject on their own to keep us extra busy. The syllabus didn’t have a wider perspective and therefore to broaden our horizon many guests' lectures were conducted. The attendance was strict and one can’t run away with that. The management was strict and even letters were sent to the permanent address provided in the college form. The college always promoted us to take up higher studies and 70% of my batch mates then enrolled for studies.

The student to faculty ratio for B.Com was quite high and was good to see that most of the professors had in-depth knowledge of the subject. Apart from the permanent faculty, there were also many part-time professors who came and took lectures on particular topics. In short, the college has hired experts for respective subjects. Almost most of them had their Ph.D. done and were still busy with some researches. They also involved some bright students during vacations in their researches.

The T&P department was active all year round and even though B.Com students didn’t have many job offers but the department did their bit. Most of the jobs offered were sales executive or jobs in consulting firms. Not much in this department as there are hardly any jobs for B. Com graduates. The college vouched for higher studies because they were aware that no matter how hard they try they won’t be able to place the normal graduate students. Placements for B.Sc, BMS, and BMM are quite good though.

The college doesn’t have its own hostel and this is one department where there is still room for improvement. Every year the number of outsiders coming to the college is quite high and still, there’s no hostel is a lack in college’s facilities that they have. However, there are numerous paying guests and flats available in the area close to the college. One has to spend 15-20k for a paying guest facility. There are private hostels and government hostels in Mumbai a letter from college are enough to have accommodation there.

There are 3 buildings inside the campus as science, commerce, and Arts colleges have their own buildings. All the classrooms are air-conditioned and Mithibai was the first in Mumbai to introduce air-conditioned classrooms. The parking lot inside the college is reserved for the staff but just outside the college there’s a large parking area as quite a few of them bring their own cars. The buildings are huge and all the facilities are there inside the building like the library. The library is huge and has all the academic and non-academic books easily available. The library is turned digital now and one can access the library by logging through their college id. There is also a spacious recreation area inside the building. The recreation rooms are separate for boys and girls. There is also an auditorium capable of accommodating over 800 students at a time. It is one of the biggest theatres one can see as it was used for showing many documentary films to us.

The college gave ample opportunities in the non-academic department. Almost 20 clubs are running inside the college and I was a part of quite a few of them. Clean our beaches were one such initiative and Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi joined that drive and I did join the drive many times. Go green, save the girl child were among the social initiatives that college has vouched for time and again. There were daily activities and I associated myself with most of them. It was lovely being a part of all of those. If one understands the students very well here are the teachers. If they see the slightest of potential they back the student to the core. Last but not the least I would like to talk about the fest as the fest of Mithibai is watched throughout the country as National media also covers the event. You can watch MTV as their VJs are present for interviews and to cover the entire event.
