Gokhale Memorial Girl's College (GMGC), established in 1938, was the first undergraduate degree college for women to teach Psychology in the 3 year degree course. It is at present in the third cycle of accreditation and obtained B grade. It is affiliated to the University of Calcutta and aided by the UGC. For admission, candidates need to fill up the form after meeting the criteria available on the website. After publication of merit list, candidates are called for counseling round.

I have joined the Department of Political Science in 2015. The minimum percentage for filling up the form is 60% aggregate. There are no entrance exams. The students get admission on merit basis, depending upon their higher secondary result. Because of my interest to join civil service in future, I opted for Political Science (Hons.). The course deals with in depth and details of political science discipline. The six semesters provides a wholesome knowledge on public administration, international relations, political theory and other core themes of the discipline. This course will definitely help to enhance your knowledge on political science which will be beneficial to obtain jobs in civil service exams and for educational sector jobs.

In Political Science Department, there are four full time facilities for our 33-student's batch. Thus, the approximate teacher's- student ratio is 1:8. There are total 15 departments and 16 courses, each department having 4 full time faculty members. Most of the Professors are PhD scholars with teaching experience 20-25 years. Other assistant professors are MA, B.Ed, M.Phil with teaching experience of approximately 8 years. All the faculties are expert in their fields and provide in depth lecture with presentations on each topic to make the topic interesting and understandble. The faculties are super cooperative and help you clear each and every doubt in the best way possible.

GMGC is not great in placements. The Tata Consultancy Service conducts a five day training program with the final semester students, from who they select a few. 39 students from our batch were selected to join the Tata Consultancy Services in the campus interview session and 16 of them got job offer.

GMGC has collaborated with the Young Women Christian Association to provide hostel facilities to its students. The hostel is at a distance of 4 kms from the college campus. The food is prepared within the hostel. The type and quality of food is good and hygienic. It is well secured for girls. The YWCA ensures total safety and security of the girl students. Only the mothers and female guardians of students are allowed inside the hostel. There are other PG facilities as well.

The GMGC campus is approx 8000 square feet. The college is adjacent to Gokhale Memorial Girls School sharing a common Auditorium. GMGC is opposite to SSKM hospital. On the right side it has Sugar and Spice restaurant. There are many restaurants, medicine stores, religious places for all religion, park, bus stops, metro station available near GMGC campus. The labs are well furnished with necessary equipments. There are separate departmental libraries in each department along with a centralised library with almost all necessary books required for different courses. There is a restroom for the students. The playground, with an area of approx 700 sq feet, has setup for volleyball, cricket and badminton.

My 3 years in GMGC has been great. There are many seminars and lectures being organised at regular intervals. Different type of games including quiz, antakshari, drama are being conducted. NCC camps are organised. An annual exhibition is held where students from all the departments take part. Annual fest "Mohona" is celebrated where students set up stalls. GMGC though maintains strict 75% compulsory attendance, has the best and most cooperative faculties who nurtures your knowledge to attain adequate knowledge in your subject.
