BMS College of Engineering B.Tech Review By Khush Thakkar

I have studied from BMSCE and don’t think there’s a better engineering college than this. The pedigree is the oldest and has still holds on to the reputation that it has. The college is strict as we had to leave the mobile phones at the hostel because in the college building it was not allowed and attendance was also compulsory. Both the rules if not followed had a penalty attached to them and the students who pretended themselves to be cool by not following the rules had to face repercussions. Coming from a small town in Gujarat it was all new for me and my aim was not just studies but to have a personality that I could boast in front of my friends. BMSCE has done all such favors to me as when I entered the college I couldn’t even speak two sentences straight in English. Bangalore is an education hub and BMSCE College is just proof of that as many students from my state were my classmates and seniors as well. Not just they but we even had students from other countries as well and I pity those who go abroad for engineering when we have a world-class college in our country itself.

Even though I was a topper cracking the nut here took all that I had. I got exhausted after the second but the motivation factor at the college from management and teachers was such that they kept me going. Studying through projectors and digital space was a new experience. I minced myself in studies that sometimes I even forgot that I have friends and family but to be an engineer from BMSCE, you have to forget that because it’s a school thing like homework, assignments and studying even after coming back to the hostel because the studies were tough. The passing percentage was less because the studies were tough and ATKT was common.

The professors had in-depth knowledge of the subjects they were assigned. We were allowed to ask doubts as many times as we wanted. For someone who probably wasn’t as smart were given extra attention. The faculty were strict but also pampered us at the same time. The premier quality of the faculty at BMSCE was that they were approachable at any point in time. I can never thank them enough because they loved students like their own and whenever we felt down they cheered us up.

Placement defines the institute and at BMSCE it was a duck soup. Bangalore has over 10k companies and all of them need engineers. BMSCE Placements cell took a note of the student’s grade at the start of the 7th semester and students with high pointers were given special classes. The case should have been different as the one below 7 pointers were considered the weaker ones and appearing for campus placements was not something that would have been possible without proper guidance. A week-long session was held and made sure all of us are ready for the 50+ companies that visit every year. I was a mechanical student and capital goods companies were quite less and the placements were also reasonable. ABB, Jain Irrigation, L&T were the best companies but they were not happy with our interview or the pointers and hardly 50% of the students got placed from Mechanical departments.

There are hostels inside the campus while the college also has started outside campus apartments. They are new and well-constructed. The rooms were not that huge but had all the basic facilities. The college bus used to come on time for pick-up and was ready to drop us once the college was over. There were 17 apartments and each room had 2 students staying. The campus hostels are average and have a common dining hall while we had a dining area that was spacious enough to accommodate 100 students. The food provided didn’t just have the south Indian menu and had all the variety that kept our taste bud happy. Our room had a wardrobe, 2 study tables, 2 chairs, and 2 beds. The bathrooms were attached and had geezers installed in them. RO water was available and the security made sure that we are inside the hostel building well before the time.

The 15 acres BMSCE Campus is not big or small. The college had a mix of some old and newly constructed buildings. There were 10+ blocks and 2 libraries inside the campus. The sick room was there in the main building and also the labs were in the main building. The college sports ground was good and also had seating arrangements. The infrastructure was in-between but had all the basic facilities if not the luxurious facilities.

Other state students don’t have to worry a bit because you will have students from almost all Indian states. For the first time in my life, I met Northeast people as they were plenty. Gujaratis are everywhere and if allowed we could have formed our own society as well. The college societies were open for all and we were encouraged to join multiple societies. I was a part of the chess club and even represented my college at the inter college chess championships. You can do almost anything learn new things on daily basis but not at the cost of studies as there were possible only if you study hard.
