The Bhawanipur Education Society College B.Com Review By Bhawani Karnani

Bhawanipur College is one of those private colleges that are always in news. Sometimes for the celebrity guests that they invite or for the artists that they produce or for the frequent fight that was part and parcel of the campus. Its location is such that all the Richie-rich of the city tries to get admission here. For all those who hate rules or don’t believe in the bullshit of discipline, they can take admissions here as the college is tailor-made for such students. There are a lot of hoardings around of compulsory attendance but was it? I still can’t stop gushing over it because how can students be regular when the teachers were absent many times or they had some or the other reasons to cancel the classes. Unfortunately, BESC College is affiliated to CU and therefore has to conduct practicals and internals due to marks submissions at the university level. The commerce department which is the most sought-after one has only negatives to share and I am confused as to where to begin from.

Worst ever would be underplaying with the kind of system in place. No regular classes or compulsory attendance. The internals is a mere formality as the students who can praise the teachers for no reason will get more marks than the one who actually deserves. In our days all you had to do was to make some friends who come to college as there was no point traveling 12 miles to attend the college daily. One thing though that the college has many things to learn from as there are many active clubs and the college has not produced students but they had some of the talents in various fields such as actors, sportsmen, and politicians.

Professors are known to help students out but at Bhawanipur the students keep a safe distance from them. The reason is normal as the students know that professors themselves don’t know the answers how they can help them. This was the quality of the professors during my time. They were happier if you have bunked the classes representing the college at some events. They always gave such students examples because they were the ones who made their workload easy by not attending the classes.

From what I have heard that companies have started visiting the campus. Trust me in our days there were no placements and some of my classmates back then are still struggling in their life as the college has not even made us capable of simple accounting. This was the case then and in terms of campus placements it was none whatsoever. I along with some of my friends was left with no option but to look for higher education. If what I have heard is true that the college has started giving placements means everything must have changed. I hope and pray it has because otherwise, the college held no meaning.

The college has 5-10% outsiders during our time who either had relatives or stayed in PGs. Kolkata has a lot of students coming from different states and therefore there is no shortage of options if you are from other places. The college should have made a provision for that because it has ample space or the money power to build a hostel of its own.

The college is big and the buildings are well maintained. I still pass by college often and see that it has only gone better than it was before. Many new buildings have also come up and if you look at the college plus it's surrounding you will get attracted as the college no doubt is beautiful. Talking about the facilities it has it all. Not just 1 but 2 auditoriums which are occupied often because we had many guests’ lectures or the events schedules and the auditorium was the place where it all held. The library is huge as previously it was just on the ground floor but during our time the upper floor was also converted into a library. The computer lab is also inside the library but is almost empty as it is meant for submission and projects but since only 20-25% of people attended the college the huge computer lab was mostly empty. The sports department has been taken care of as there’s a playground that was used for multi-purpose. Kolkata and football go hand in hand and therefore all the footballers who joined the college were always there. The cricket practice was also done on the same ground and likewise, there were indoor sporting facilities as well.

The turf area was our discussion point as we used to plan our next meet or any plans for the day there. The canteen was awesome and spending time there watching fights from there was the best visual that we could witness often. The college also organizes DJ nights during Navratri since the college is owned by Gujarati trustees. The cultural fest Umang is covered by all the local media as the fashion show to skit all are just breathtaking. The college is so happening that stars keep visiting the college and off late what I have heard is that stars have also started coming to the college to promote their films. Thus, if you want to have a bright future through studies don’t join this college but if your future is already secured by your parents don’t look for any other options then.
