Institute of Engineering and Management B.Tech Review By Shubhraneel Chakraborty

I'm Shubhraneel Chakraborty, a pre-final year student at the Institute of Engineering and Management, Salt Lake, Kolkata. My overall experience in my 3 years at this college has been somewhat of a mixed bag. I wouldn't say that it has been a bad college life for me, but it’s no different than being in a school for me. The disciplinary measures imposed on the students are a bit too childish, but it’s somewhat necessary also to ensure students don't become too complacent or relaxed. What made me choose this institute is its placement record. IEM is a college that has earned its reputation due to its immensely impressive placement record. And that convinced me to join this institute over the others.

I'm enrolled in a 4 year B.Tech course and my department is Computer Science Engineering (with specialization in IoT). For entry to this course, during our admission, we needed a rank of above 6000 in WBJEE. I got a rank of 3584 which grant me entry into this course. You need to score more than 75 percent aggregate in your respective board exams to be eligible for admission to this course. My motive for enrolling in this course was to get a high paying job in either a service or product based IT company by the end of my 4 year course.

I wouldn't lie if I say; most of the faculty at IEM is not up to the mark. Some teachers in our IT department are really good and they deserve all the praise for their teaching ability. Irrespective of their teaching abilities, most of the teachers are well qualified and some even have PHDs to show for it. But not every teacher is capable of teaching every subject. There are a lot of teachers in our department who teach multiple subjects and sometimes, it’s fair to say, some of the faculty just don't catch students' attention with their teaching ability. Maybe a teacher seems a good fit for one subject, but for another, they are just not. So, that's how the overall experience is.

We have a placement cell at our institute, and I would say they are really helpful. They organize aptitude classes twice every week to ensure students are well informed about all the best practices students need to excel at aptitude rounds in the different placement exams. They also organize placement exams every now and then to help the students. And our placement cell is the reason why IEM has its reputation. IEM is the top private institute in Kolkata among all other colleges, and that is due to its immense placement record over the past few years.

The campus has definitely got a lot to improve. There is absolutely no infrastructure whatsoever. Classes smell bad, ceiling fans are not at proper places. Even the stairs are a complete mess. You would climb down a particular stair only to find that you are at the same place as you did when you tried to climb up the stairs. It’s like a maze and the stairs need serious reconstruction. The only good thing is the canteen we have, and it’s like a proper canteen. Also, the washrooms are more or less clean, so you wouldn't feel like throwing up after using them. We have a basketball ground as the only outdoor amenity, and you can spend some time over there if you want to. We could probably do with a better building as well.

Campus life isn't the best at IEM, but it isn't the worst either. The college campus can improve a lot in terms of the overall amenities available, a better WIFI facility and a lot more. But IEM has got a reputation due to the numerous events organized every year. Starting from our cultural fest, IEMPACT, to the annual tech fest, INNOVACION, to our Model United Nations event in IEM MUN, to organizing different conferences, seminars, there are a lot of events to look forward to in IEM. There are a lot of societies and clubs in IEM as well, including the IEDC, which is an excellent place to build projects.
