K J Somaiya College of Engineering B.Tech Review By Alpeshkumar Galani

I did B.E. in computer engineering from KJSCE as it is best branches of KJ Somaiya Vidhya Vihar. The name is huge but not the vision as the KJ Somaiya group which was at the top once upon a time is no more among the name that students thrive for. The college infrastructure is good and labs definitely need a special mention as it has all the materials. Hence the campus is the best among the campuses in Mumbai. Being a Gujarati it became relatively easier for me as the college has a minority quota for Gujarati. Earlier the crowd was mixed bag but in my batch, 6 out of 10 were Gujarati’s and it was certain that the college doesn’t give importance to the merit list anymore. Our department holds the distinction of producing the best college student F1 team. The college teams that participates in ROBOCON and BAJA and have done reasonably well in such competitions. One thing that is perhaps common among students of KJSCE is that all the students here can be seen pursuing masters from top foreign universities such as NYU, Cornell, and Georgia Tech among others. Getting funds for projects is also quite easy as money-minded people are not the ones who are running this college.

Well, the college doesn’t care whether you come or not but they do keep a check on what value are you bringing to the college. If you are not contributing in anyway, you might be called upon for some serious undertakings. The learning exposure was diversified and it seems like the college has sent their scouts at IITs or BITs to adopt the same. The college also has student exchange programs and provides proper internships as a part of the curriculum. Resources and the plans that are in line are great but there has to be some strictness to get it implemented. If that happens, KJSCE will again be on top.

Maximum professors were Ph.D. holders and IIT Alumni. However, they came and took classes and then you can’t find them. They are busier than the doctors as they hardly had time after the lectures. If by chance you went to them, you will get some serious words to listen that you were sleeping in the class or you were not attentive when I was teaching. Hence, the faculty is not done as the great colleges have great teachers too.

Mostly all that you must have read is bogus. The college placement is not that great as 3-4LPA is the average package that students grabbed. The IT companies like TCS, Infosys, and Mindtree were the ones who were happy with how we evolved as some of them also trained us during internships. It’s the college past record that has made companies visit the campus otherwise the students are either skilled on their own or commands knowledge because the college did not help us by providing proper training for it.

There are two hostels on the campus. Maitreyi (Girls Hostel) and Sandipani (Boys Hostel). The hostel rooms of boys were huge and each floor had a different kind of rooms as they were available from 2 seaters to 4 seaters. The hostel is common for PG and UG students. The hostel was spacious as a large number of students used to stay in the hostel. The hostel also had a mess but from what I heard the food wasn’t that great but who cares. You just need to step out and there are innumerable options. Mumbai is anyways heaven for food.

The very disappointment was that even after paying truckloads of fees the classroom was not air-conditioned. The labs were huge and fantastic. The library has turned digital a short while ago and can be visited even after college hours. The library remains open till 9 PM. The number of canteens might surprise you but they were 4 in all. A lot of bliss and nature is there on the campus. The college auditorium from what I have heard is the biggest in Mumbai after IIT-B. Now comes the sporting parts as in terms of sports the college had indoor as well as outdoor facilities in plethora. From tracks field to football ground, everything was on international standard. Football is one of the sports played on the campus and it shows during the inter-college sports week as well. Football trophy always lands at KJSCE. The campus is huge and well maintained. Thanks to the huge fees that we pay.

The events are a part of college life and KJSCE used to have events every single week almost. The departmental fest to technical fest. From annual fest to annual sporting event I participated in most of them. The prosperity of the college may not be in academics but in extra-curricular activities, the college has done astoundingly well. The societies of the college remain highly active and if you want to have a reason to skip the classes join one of those societies and you will get a letter from the society head and you will enjoy the luxury of not attending lectures. The academic part has deteriorated but despite that, the college has somehow managed to maintain its name among the top.
