University of Engineering and Management B.Tech Review By Anushka Maity

I have been a student of University of Engineering and Management, Kolkata (UEM). From my experience I can say that it is one of the best private colleges under UGC. This college was established in 2015, within this few years this college has been able to stand out from other private colleges. Be it in academics, curriculum, entrepreneurship this college has always shone. I could remember my first few months were hectic. The college organised so many new fests for freshers that we hardly had a minute. UEMK is very strict about their discipline. This college has so many things to offer for this generation, every faculty and every senior will just push and encourage you to achieve your goal. Every member that you will come across is very helpful. I would like to highlight the fact that this college provides classes for the GATE exam and other tough exams from the very 1st year. The college has hosted international tech fests and also many cultural fests. But our actual journey started with lectures, labs, projects, entrepreneurship classes, group discussion, English lab classes, workshops and so on.

Academics is one of the main things to look for in a good college. I was a B.Tech student (ECE). I took admission in this college because I heard the faculty of ECE is very good and I was proved right. The faculty is good enough to take care of it. We were offered some amazing projects; our biggest project was An Unmanned Surface Vessel (Remote controlled bomb disposal). The project included analytics, presentation, testing, market research, in field testing and so on. The schedule was tight so we hardly had any time for the other things. But the project was a great success. It was followed by many live sessions. The projects and the research work that we had to go through have helped us a lot. This has eventually prepared us for the upcoming changes in the technical world and has given a path to relate ourselves to the modern world. We had mid semesters so we had a total of six exams annually which has also helped us to be on track and we could easily recollect our studied materials.

The majority of the faculty was great, many of them had experience in teaching in renowned places but some were not that great. From electrical, mechanical and civil departments the teachers had industrial and on field experiences. Professors are very interactive and they are available after college hours for our doubt clearing. They mainly focus on visually analysing rather than the bookish learning. We had pre placement classes from the 2nd year of our college where they prepared us for the final year or mainly for the placements, it has helped us immensely to overcome our fear of facing the interviewer. Overall the faculty of this college is pretty amazing.

About 95% students from our college get placement every year with a decent amount of offers. University of Engineering and Management, Kolkata offered the highest package of Rs. 40 LPA by Adobe. The university offers an average package of Rs. 4 LPA. UEMK has a very active placement cell. Almost ninety five companies visited the university offering more than seven hundred and ninety jobs to the registered candidates. Top recruiting companies like TCS, Wipro, TechMahindra, Infosys, Cognizant, Capgemini and so on offered their jobs and recruited at least fifteen to twenty per cent of the registered candidates with more than one job offer. From CSE almost all the students get recruited to the IT companies and also get to do internships with highly reputed companies.

The college does not have in campus hostels for girls or boys. They have hostels that are nearly 1.5 km away from the college. I would suggest you to stay in a rented place or in PG. This will be cheaper and will be more convenient. Try to stay near the university that will be more convenient.

University has pretty good and advanced infrastructure. In the university there are many well- equipped labs with new and modern laboratory equipments, 24x7 computers are available. We had a huge library equipped with over two lakh fifty thousand books, journals, magazines, multimedia learning aids, e-journals and academic endeavours. There is a Wi-Fi facility throughout the campus. It also offers a gym, hospital/medical facilities and cafeteria that serve fresh and tasty food at a reasonable price. The classes are equipped with smart boards that helped us in many ways.

The university does not have a very big campus. We didn't have a big playground but we had a basketball court and many indoor games were there like table tennis, carom, badminton etc. The atmosphere of the college is quite liberal as it is situated in Kolkata. The campus life will motivate you to go forward towards your goal as you will see everyone is doing something or the other. We did not have a big campus but we were bound by restrictions and discipline and I am thankful for that as it has taught a lot.
