Jesus and Mary College B.Com Review By Swati Dwivedi

Writing about this college is making me realize that I hated it when I was a part of this college but now when I sharing my side of the story I am actually missing it. The problem with JMC was that it was like a school with timely lectures and compulsory attendance and then head back home. This is how my first year passed by but things changed as time progressed and what can be called a beautiful journey came to an end after my graduation was over. After getting the required attendance our times were usually spent at the Taj, CCD as all were nearby. The college also serves nice coffee and chatting with seniors and enjoying the open sky there was certainly a great charm about the JMC campus and I will try to put all of them in words.

Same like school as a perfect pattern was followed and the students who were not ready for it were shown the doors. Yes, this is true now parents may call it pros but was certainly a con for us. The college is a pure girl’s college and most of the professors were ladies too. Every week society and department lectures were conducted in the huge auditorium of JMC which was attended by mostly boys of other colleges. The college is under DU University and B. Com (Hons) is a little tougher course. The college makes sure that they make students ready a month before the University exams. The last-minute internals, submissions, and panic at the viva’s are how it went by. I am feeling nostalgic remembering the glory days at JMC.

The faculty is not just great but the greatest is what I felt. The faculty for sociology, political science, and economics were among the best of the lot. All of them have passed out from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi School of Economics, and correlate with the studies being a former student of the DU. The noise always cribbed about low attendance and the faculty members were strict about that. Other than studies they also used to guide us with current happenings in the country. The college has a good core of teachers who know how to teach and most importantly were supportive.

The college placement is not that great but at least like many other DU colleges our college also has a placement cell in place. The B. Com (Hons) students obviously have an edge over the other courses students. The companies that came to the college campus included Deloitte, E&Y, Libsys & Zomato were some of the companies that took some of the students. Yes, I was not selected though I tried my best. The average salary offered was 25-30k and some of them I know have reached places now. So in that sense placement department if not good is not bad either.

90% of the girls were from Delhi itself and this is the reason the management is not interested in having a hostel. There are many girls PGs, flats, and private hostels in Delhi. They are the options that can be considered but nearby college there are none whatsoever.

The beautiful lawn of JMC is where we used to chat out our days. Then comes the huge library which is stocked with a plethora of books. The entire campus is full of greenery and the area in which the college is built is good enough. Other facilities that are there in the college include L-Park, Amphitheatre, Basketball Court, and open ground which covers the maximum area. There is a common room and that was our chilling point. There is also a gym but quite small. Italian Embassy, Tapas, various food joints, and Taj are nearby the college. The connectivity from the college is poor as the nearest metro itself is a 10minutes ride. Most of them used to come by car and the parking area is huge. JMC has a better infrastructure than many other colleges of Delhi as I have been to many colleges and I know it.

The best part is that it’s an all-girls college and therefore we could wear anything with freedom. No outsiders were allowed inside the campus and thus JMC College is one of the most secured places in Delhi. Life can be boring at JMC but various societies are running and please audition for them to make life happening at the college. This will help you explore more and also make more friends. There were long breaks between the lectures and many coffee shops near the college made up for those times. From my point of view, the college was the place where I enjoyed maximum freedom. Playing basketball and Kho-Kho with friends was also an integral part of college life. After college, we used to roam in the area as it was so happening and the bhel puri bhaiya gave special discounts to us when we went there in groups. Not just the time spent in college alone but during the college, time was the best and I am literally left numb by the end of it as the plethora of memories have started churning in my head.
