West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences Review By Prerana Maiti

As we're Bengalis, we are fond of fish. So, from my childhood I was very curious about different types of fishes. I was watching my mom cutting any fish. As a result, an interest of dissecting fish and knowing about its different parts strike in my head. I have also built interest on keeping ornamental fish. So, I choose fishery.

It is Professional Fishery course. It takes four years to complete bachelor's degree, then another two years for master's degree. One can enter to this college through their marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English on board exam as state student. One can also entered through CUET (Common University Entrance Exam) as ICAR candidates.

There are ten departments in total. There are Dept. of Aquaculture, Department of Aquatic Animal Health and Management, Dept. of Aquatic Environment Management, Department of Fish Nutrition, Department of Fisheries Extension, Department of Fish Processing Technology, Dept. Fisheries Resource and Management, Dept. of Fisheries Economics and Statistics, Dept. of Fisheries Engineering. Each department has 3-4 assistant professor, associate professor and professor combined with sufficient non-teaching staffs and lab operators. There is a library also.

Our college has a Placement Cell managed by professors and alumni of ex-students. Through this cell they call private companies for interviews. Lots of students got job every year. There is a government job in fisheries sector known as Fisheries Extension Officer (FES) having a pay scale of Rs. 35000.

Our college has three hostels. One ladies' hostel named 'Matsyakanya' for UG, PG, Ph.D students and one boys' hostel named 'Dolphin' for UG students and another boys' hostel named 'Piranha' for PG, Ph.D students. Each student is provided with one bed, one wall desk, one Almirah, one table and one chair. There are geysers for hot water during winter, washing machine, aqua guard facility, badminton court.

Campus has two main buildings. All the departments except AAHM (Aquatic Animal Health and Management) are located at front building. For Microbiology or AAH there is another building. There is an auditorium with a capacity of 200 people. There are also two small buildings one for wet laboratory and another for field work for Dept. of Aquaculture.

Campus life is awesome. There are one badminton court for girls, another for boys, one big playground, one table tennis coat. Once in four years fest is organized. Every year Annual Sports' Meet and Annual Cultural Meet are organized. Many competitions such as extempore, debts, quiz pop, poster making competition are organized on World Environmental Day. Special days and important date are also celebrated on Campus.
