National Institute of Technology B.Tech Review By Aman Gupta

I’m Aman Gupta, a student of National Institute of Technology, Agartala. NIT Agartala is known to be in the list of the pioneer engineering institutes in North-eastern India. It is located in Jirania, which is nearly 2-3 km away from the capital city Agartala. This institute is in association with many top class colleges like- IIT Kharagpur, IIEST Shibpur (now NIT Shibpur) and many other tier 1 colleges. Admission process is almost similar to that of other NITs. One has to qualify 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and secure a good rank in JEE Mains entrance exam. Now, if we discus about the ranking of college, then it is at 75th step from the top in the NIRF ranking list which is a matter of pride for us. Management of college is not that much active but still it’s better than many others.

In NIT Agartala, I got admission in chemical engineering course of B.Tech. Program. I joined this institute in 2019. As I’ve mentioned above the eligibility but for this branch, closing rank for general category, gender neutral students was 44000 this year (Statistics of spot round are not included). To be very honest, I didn’t get this branch according to my choice but I didn’t have any choice as I got seat here in spot round. In my opinion, subjects are not as I expected and hidden mathematical operations in subjects make this course tricky. I will recommend this course for only those who have a great understanding of mathematics. However, content of curriculum is made by keeping the work that engineers will be required for in the future. One has to be attentive only then one can pass from NITs.

In our branch, there are 10 professors to instruct us. Among them, Prof. Harish Kr. Sharma is also there who the director of this institute. Since there are total 9 branches in B.Tech. So on an average, the total number of faculties in B.Tech may be perhaps in the range of 90-100. All the professors are well versed in their own subjects. They have been alumni of many prestigious institutes like IITs and University of Windsor, Canada etc. Most of them have 10+ years of experience in teaching which is admirable. Teachers are very supportive to us and there way of teaching is simple and that much related to our daily lives that we can easy have the feel and essence of subject, but one has to regularly follow the lectures for good understanding. A big kudos to all our professors who have taken care of us to the core.

Placement scenario is like other NITs here. In 2020 placements, the highest package was Rs. 37 LPA offered by an IT company and average package offered was Rs. 5 LPA which I don’t think is satisfactory. Total 32 companies visited the campus and overall 60% students got placed through campus. Placements in chemical engineering are not that good as we expected. Now let’s come to recruiters, Mphasis, Reliance Jio, Maruti Suzuki, Amazon, Infosys, IBM, L&T Infotech, Future Group were the top recruiters along with a few PSUs like- BPCL. Finally one thing I want to say is- NIT won’t give you anything but you’ve to take from NIT.

Now let’s come to hostels. There are 6 boys and 2 girls hostels available for B.Tech. Program. Room is shared by 2 people in first year and from 3rd year one can get single shared room in hostel. Hostel food is not that good. Guards are very strict about hostels rules and regulations. One has to write his name and entry/leaving time while entering/leaving the campus or any hostel block. There is night curfew for girls in campus from 6:30 PM which is the worst thing. You can get washer man facility here but washing machines aren’t available here. Hostel fee is 50000₹ per annum.

If we talk about the infrastructure, then this 400 acres large campus is full of green forests inside it. If you’re a nature lover, then you’re at the correct place. It has well maintained classrooms and labs, central library, digital library, high speed internet Wi-Fi etc. Canteen facility is also there. Some of them are- Foodies Restaurant, Dakshin Upaahar etc. We have all the sports facilities in our campus. In addition to that; bank, ATM and post office are also there in the NIT campus. ISRO inaugurated Space Technology Incubation Centre is also in NIT Agartala.

When it comes to campus life then in my opinion, it’s not as I’d expected. Night curfew and strictness spoils all the amusement of our campus life. There are several clubs like robotics club, arts club, music club and drama club etc. Seniors are very supportive and interactive in our college. We have 2 main annual fests. One is AAYAM- Annual Technical Fest and another is MOKSHA- Annual Cultural Fest. But remember, 75% attendance criteria is also here to make a balance in enjoyment and study.
