HL College of Commerce B.Com Review By Mayur Solanki

HL is affiliated to the Gujarat University and is certainly one of the best in the state. Students from all the cities of Gujarat and from rest of the states come to this college. The college’s popularity is on uptrend as Gujarat is considered the top state in India. It was nice to see some girls from different states coming to this college and also have some good things to say about the college and the state. Not just the academics but is one of the few colleges that hosts cultural events and many other events that keeps students busy all year round. One needs high grades in 12th to get admission in this college. The seats are plenty still to make cut here is not tough as 90-95% seats are filled through merit. In B.Com there are 2 specialized subjects that are offered by the college. One is Accountancy and other one is Computer Applications. The fees is so reasonable that anyone can afford this college.

Our college Principal Dr. Mona S. Kelshikar has been serving her term for over a decade now. She has made sure that college excels in this department and therefore all the students’ progress is kept in check. I chose accountancy and our Dr. Nisha S Bhavsar has done a tremendous job in making sure that students are on their toes when it comes to studies. The classes are great not in terms of size but in terms of facilities as well. The theory and practical are divided to keep us engaging. The attendance is very strict and the college has no nonsense policy when it comes to attendance.

All the professors are quality and believe in imparting the same in students as well. The alumni of HL have done really well and all thanks to our faculty members who have us insight on what the commercial studies helps in. The only problem that I count is the faculty to student ratio. The same set of faculty was in command for all three years. The associate professors who came once in a while were very few. I am saying this because most of the faculty members were strict and trust me some students also changed few subjects to avoid them. However, they were all helpful and always there for us in times of adversity.

Don’t bother chasing placements as just merit students at the University level stood a chance. The rate of students getting placed was 1/3rd of the attendance demand. Big guns like KPMG, HDFC Bank, and TCS were on board but just got away with handful of us. The case is exactly the different when it comes to M. Com placements as 90% of them got placed in bigger corporate and that too at higher levels.

The college has arranged hostel facilities for both boys and girls but not on the campus. The hostels are located at a nearby venue. The girls hostel is better than the boys hostel and strict as well. While in boys hostel which is situated at the University campus has no business in strictness. Students can come and go whenever they want. The rooms have the basic facilities but the food from what I have heard is pathetic. With the numbers of students from outside are increasing the college should have a hostel building inside the campus as there is enough space in the campus itself.

The campus is big and have some or the other buildings everywhere in the campus. Inside the campus there is a building named HL Plaza. The building has an auditorium and a stage. The college has a proper cricket ground and University matches are organized in those grounds. The ground also has a pavilion and that gives you the feel of a stadium and there is enough seating capacity as well. There is also an indoor sporting facility which has chess tables, table tennis tables, badminton court, and a gym. Inside the campus there’s a medical emergency facility as well. The college campus is fully Wi-Fi and one can access that from any part of the campus. The college has a huge canteen that serves snacks and thali as well. One of the grandest libraries that you will find is at HL college campus. The college is well maintained and therefore a huge cheer for the college infrastructure.

Being called HLite wherever I went gave me a different feeling. I worked hard to get that tag and once I became a part of illustrious HL family, I made college my 2nd home. I made ample friends and even after college hours spending time on endless discussions with friends made my life at HL the best. The college is located in the prime area and therefore even after it was late in the campus and we were literally asked to leave the campus, we didn’t leave the campus until then. Long live HL, I owe you big time.
