Sikkim Manipal University

Sikkim Manipal University was the first institute of higher learning to be established on a public private partnership (PPP) basis in the year 1995. SMU is a self-financed, co-educational, private university with a high orientation and focus on research. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, Ph.D, M.Phil and diploma courses in a wide range of academic disciplines including management, engineering, humanities, mathematics, medical sciences, hospital administration, and many others. The study programs are provided both through the regular and distance education modes.

However, it is the ‘management studies’ and ‘information technology’ courses of the academy offered via the distance mode that are more popular. SMU was created chiefly to hone the aptitude and skills of the young populace of Sikkim so that they could exploit employment opportunities not only within the state but beyond the state borders as well.  All courses and programs of SMU are recognized and approved by UGC, DEC, Medical Council of India (MCI), Indian Association of Physiotherapy, Nursing Council of India, and AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education).

History of Sikkim Manipal University

Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical, and Technological Sciences founded way back in 1992 on November 15th is the forerunner of Sikkim Manipal University. The Manipal Pai Foundation and the state government of Sikkim inked a deal in 1995 to establish Sikkim Manipal University with the pious objective of improving the state of healthcare/medical services and higher education in Sikkim as well as in the rest of the country. The joint venture between the Sikkim government and Manipal Pai Foundation, a public-private initiative in the fields of higher education and healthcare, was the first of its kind.

The legislative assembly of Sikkim passed the ‘The Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical, and Technological Sciences (Amendment) Act No. 13 in 2009 on 12th December for effecting the name change to Sikkim Manipal University. The two campuses of the university-medical campus and technology campus are located in Tadong (Gangtok) and Majitar (Rangpo), both in East Sikkim.
