The NMIMS is deemed to be a multi-disciplinary university located in Mumbai, the financial capital of India, and selects all aspiring candidates for group discussion and personal interview on the basis of their NMAT (NarseeMonjee Admission Test) scores; a yearly computer-based business aptitude testing conducted by the GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council).
NMIMS is run by the Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM) charitable trust and has six campuses in India; namely, Mumbai (SBM was established in 1981), Shirpur (2007), Bengaluru (2008), Hyderabad (2010), Navi Mumbai (2017), and Indore (2017). History of NMIMS
Back in 1981, the University of Mumbai decided to allow the operation of new management institutes. The pressing demand to set up more quality management institutes like the IIMs can be held responsible for the birth of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies. The institute was named after the intrepid Indian entrepreneur Late Narsee Monjee, and it had evolved to become a rich knowledge repository of meaningful and contemporary management education. It began its humble journey with just four full-time faculties, around three thousand books, and the fortunate forty students. It was affiliated to Mumbai University and started offering a two years full-time masters degree course in management studies. The classes were conducted above the Bhaidas Hall at Vile Parle (W). The new building for management education has an area of thirty-six thousand square feet and houses equipped a dozen classrooms, conference and seminar halls, a well-stocked library, etc.
- 1982-83: First annual seminar and also a marketing fair named NUMAAISH was organized
- 1985: Computers installed
- 1985-86: Mumbai University validated two years full-time MMS (Master of Management Studies),three-year masters part-time courses, two year part-time DMS, and one-year diploma courses
- 1986-87: Permanent recognition bestowed by Mumbai University
- 1987-88: Doctorate programme was recognized by Mumbai University
- 1991-92: Became the first management institute in Mumbai to be accredited by AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) and the autonomous PGDBA (Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration) course was also started
- 1994-95: First NMIMS newsletter was published and the Centre for Capital Market and Investment Management was also inaugurated
- 1999-2000: Received a five-star rating from NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) and an industry Institute Partnership Cell (IIPC), as well as a language laboratory, were also setup
- 2002-03: Deemed to be university status (as prescribed by the University Grants Commission, i.e., UGC) was accorded by the Ministry of Human Resources, Government of India
- 2003-04: The formal de-affiliation process starts and NMIMS leaves the identity of Mumbai University to explore a new one for itself
- 2004: ICL, i.e., Integral Certification (P) Ltd awarded NMIMS with the prestigious ISO 9001:2000 (International Standards Organization 9001: 2000) certification, rated amongst the top ten Indian B-Schools (brand equity, intellectual resources, potential for growth, and infrastructure) in the Outlook Cfore Survey, received the Golden Peacock National Training Award from the Institute of Directors (IOD) in the large training provider category
Campus and Life at NMIMS
Both the boys and girls hostels are situated in close proximity to NMIMS-Mumbai. It has two full-fledged hostels as well as four rented accommodations. Provision for filtered drinking water and facilities for gym, table tennis, and other sports are available. The mess provides nutritious meals for the residents. Students are supposed to vacate their rooms in the summer time for maintenance purpose. Hostel accommodation is provided on first come first serve basis and preference is given to outstation candidates. Best Courses Offered at NMIMS-Mumbai
The Institute of Intellectual Property Studies is the centre of excellence.
The most sought-after courses offered by NMIMS-Mumbai are described briefly below. Note that NMIMS considers only NMAT scores for all its courses and all campuses.
B.Com: It is compulsory for the candidates to score minimum 60% in their class 12 board examinations to apply for B.Com Honors. They need to pass the NPAT entrance examination to get admission into the college.
BBA: Candidates need to aggregate 60% in 10+2 examinations in order to apply for BBA course. Once they clear the NPAT entrance exam they are granted access after an interview.
B.Tech: Candidates applying for the B.Tech course need to aggregate minimum 60% with Physics and Chemistry as their main subject. The institute accepts scores from JEE Main and NPAT entrance exams.
MBA: Graduates (any discipline) with 55% or more in aggregate are eligible. The degree program is spread over six trimesters. NMIMS has formal faculty and student exchange agreements with ESSCA (Angers campus, France and Budapest campus, Hungary), University of EUROMED Marseille (France), and ESC ROUEN (France). Several research assistantships and scholarships are also available.
M.Tech: In addition to regular disciplines like EE, CE, ME, IT, etc.; new specializations like data science are also offered. While data science is offered at undergraduate as well as postgraduate level, concentrations like artificial intelligence can only be pursued at M.Tech level. A pass in 10+2 with 60% (PCM/B) or more in aggregate and a valid graduation degree are two of the main requirements for getting an admission. Students also need to go through a written test during the selection stage.
B.Pharm: A pass in 10+2 with a minimum of 60% (PCB/M) in aggregate are eligible. This degree course is spread over eight semesters.
NMIMS Placements
Summer placements witnessed the participation of around one hundred and sixty multinational and renowned Indian companies for the 2016-18 batches of MBA students. Average stipend saw an increase by almost 21% over previous year.
