Establishment & History of IITs
In May 1950, IIT was first established by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in Kharagpur and there it was named as the Indian Institute of Technology’, but it was formally inaugurated on 18th August 1951.
After the first IIT was inaugurated, within a decade, the Institute was set-up at four more locations in India, including IIT Bombay in 1958, IIT Madras & IIT Kanpur in 1959, and IIT Delhi in 1951. Later on in 1994, the sixth Institute i.e., IIT Guwahati was established. A few years passed and in 2001, the University of Roorkee was changed to the seventh Institute called as IIT Roorkee.
Down the lane, in 2008, six more Institutes started operations which are IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Patna, IIT Ropar, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Jodhpur. Only after a year, two more IITs were set-up as IIT Mandi & IIT Indore in 2009. So, from 1951 to 2009, fifteen IITs were set-up which was commendable.
Followed by these, the Banaras Hindu university was converted to the sixteenth Institute and named as IIT BHU in 2012. In 2015, two more IITs were set up as IIT Tirupati and IIT Palakkad. Just one year passed and together in 2016, five more Institutes were inaugurated as IIT Dharwad, IIT Dhanbad, IIT Goa, IIT Bhilai, and IIT Jammu, which made the total of 23 IITs in India.
