One can go for an MHM (master of hotel management) program after graduating from BHM, and can eventually pursue a doctorate in this discipline after finishing the MHM course.

There is no doubt that this business vertical is considered as one of the most glamorous industries. However, similar to other professions, there are some flipsides of being employed in this trade. For instance, the domestic economy and the international market (as India is a member of the World Trade Organization and her economy became open-market since 1991) influence it to a great extent. Also, new jobs generate at the expense of old ones and when the existing hotel employees are either assigned with new responsibilities or when they retire. Amicably handling any unpleasant and stressful situation is a must-have characteristic for any person desirous to join this industry. Extended working hours and rotating shifts, unruly customers, hectic schedules, etc. are some major work hazards in this sector.

BHM Career Scope

Presently there are around two and a half million people employed in the hotel and catering also in other allied industries in India. There will be tremendous growth in this sector in the coming years as an increasing number of new hotels are coming up in the urban and semi-urban landscape. Trained hotel management employees will always have the edge over the untrained ones as the employers are not keen to invest in training the recruits.

BHM Syllabus

The BHM course is divided into eight academic semesters and consists of various core papers as well as electives to impart valuable lessons on communication, presentation, cooking, etc. Every student must undergo a mandatory one and a half month’s internship for learning how to apply the acquired knowledge in the workplace. The course provides the opportunity to learn from additional sources; such as seminars, guest lectures, hands-on training, etc.

The course material should be updated regularly, and it should reflect and address the demands of the hotel industry. • Accreditations and Affiliations: The hotel management college or university should be recognized by AICTE, UGC, or NCHMCT. If not, the employers will not value the awarded certificates.
• Faculty: The permanent faculty should possess strong academic qualifications backed by valuable experience gained from the industry. It will serve twin purpose, as this will allow the students to inculcate technical acumen and also people skills because both are required in the long run for a successful career in this field.
• Student to Teacher Ratio: It is always ideal to have a small student group so that the teachers can afford to spend enough time with each student.
• Classrooms and Practical Laboratories: Well-equipped practical rooms and classes are necessary for enhancing the study experience.
• Environment: The ambiance of any hotel management university or college should be conducive enough for learning. Political influence should be non-existent, or at least, minimal.
• Placements: One should never trust the placement statistics provided by the hotel management colleges and universities. A prospective student should always engage with the present students and also get in touch with the alumni to get an unbiased picture about on and off-campus recruitments.
