Formally known as the National Maritime Academy, Indian Maritime University was established in the year 2008 by an Act of Parliament to train human resources in the maritime sector and to deliver trained and academically equipped students. The university is UGC-approved and recognised by the Government of India.
The major objective of this university is to promote and facilitate the students with maritime education, research, and training. The university also believes in promoting equality, freedom, social justice, and secularism in the nation and contributes to the development of the nation.

Located at Old Vandipalayam, Uthandi, Chennai, the campus of the university is 25 km away from the East Coast road (Chennai Airport) and 28 km away from Chennai Central Railway Station. The IMU campus is located on a 20-acre land, surrounded by greenery and beachfront terrain. The campus of the university is modern and offers excellent academic learning and social university life to the students. The university facilitates the students by providing building 22+ smart classrooms, out of which 11 are equipped with air conditioners. The smart classrooms of the university are installed with smart devices like audio-visual aids and have comfortable seating space, well ventilated and well-lit classroom area. To train the students and provide them with all the practical knowledge, the Engine room is present. For more training and practical knowledge, IMU, Chennai has fully equipped workshops and machine shops for fitting, pneumatic, plumbing, etc. IMU also has well-equipped and furnished laboratories like Physics, Chemistry, and Navigation. Here, the students are trained and technically equipped.
