Gujarat National Law University [GNLU Gandhinagar] established in 2003 is a State University, currently having 8th position in NIRF Ranking 2024. GNLU Gandhinagar is approved by BCI, UGC and AIU, and is accredited by NAAC-A. Admission in GNLU Gandhinagar is offered in Law at UG/ PG/ Diploma/ Doctorate level with scholarship benefits to deserving students.
Gujarat National Law University is a premier law school in India. The institution was founded in the year 2003. It is an autonomous government law university founded by the government of Gujarat and spans over 60 acres of area. It is situated in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. To be exact, the University is located in the area known as Knowledge Corridor on the Gandhinagar-Ahmedabad Highway.
GNLU is recognized by as well as a member of various organizations. To name a few, it is a member of the Bar Council of India (BCI), the University Grants Commission (UGC), the United Nations Academic Impact and the International Association of Law Schools, among others. It has been ranked the 4th best law school by India Today and the 6th best law school nationwide by NIRF in 2021.
The institute's current Director is Dr. S. Shanthakumar, who has 30 years of teaching experience. With nearly 30 years of experience in educating at prestigious universities, such as Hidayatullah National Law University, Prof. (Dr.) S. Shanthakumar has also authored three books, in the sphere of Environmental Law and Human Rights Laws. In addition to serving as the President of the Gujarat International Maritime Arbitration Center, Prof. Shanthakumar is the Director of the Gujarat Maritime University.
The University offers various integrated 5-year law courses, which include B.A. LLB (Bachelor in Arts + Bachelor in Law), B. Com LLB (Bachelor in Commerce + Bachelor in Law), BBA LLB (Bachelor in Business Administration + Bachelor in Law), B.Sc LLB (Bachelors in Science + Bachelor in Law) and BSW LLB (Bachelors in Social Work + Bachelor in Law). The University also offers 1-year LLM. There are many groups of courses for specialization in addition to the compulsory subjects.
General
The procedure for Gujarat National Law University admissions are fair and square as there is no interview conducted. The application form procedure is also simple. One only has to fill out the CLAT Application form online. The only criteria are qualifying for the CLAT examination. It is a merit-based selection.
For LLB (Undergraduate): GNLU admission process for the undergraduate five-year course is just a straightforward step appearing for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) conducted annually. The selection in the University is merit-based, and the number of seats is 180. Generally, the students admitted to GNLU range between All India Rank (AIR) 300 to 500 for the general category. Many students range in ranks under 200, which is a feat for GNLU. The Gujarat National Law University application form is common for NLUs as your mark determines which national law university you are eligible for admission.
After qualifying for CLAT, the process is simple. Through the website of the CLAT Consortium, the students are allotted various universities. One can either choose to lock it or upgrade it. However, this is the general procedure. Once the student gets allocated GNLU and if they choose to close it, the student is asked to deposit the counselling fee and is called to join the institute within a few days. The admission procedure is flawless, to be honest, and there is a guest house in the University and other hotels close to the University where the student and their parents can stay during the process. GNLU courses are stupendous as one can pursue any graduate stream along with LLB.
For LLM (Postgraduate): The admission process for postgraduate is also similar; however, this time, the person has to appear for CLAT PG instead of CLAT UG. The eligibility criteria for appearing for CLAT PG is that the person should have an LLB degree with at least 50 per cent marks. The person can also appear for CLAT PG while they are in the final year of law school. The number of seats is 69. Apart from the horizontal reservation, the University also offers vertical reservation. Thirty percent of the seats are reserved for the woman candidates, and 5 percent are reserved for the PWD category, while 25 percent are reserved for the Gujarat Domicile candidates. The expected cut-off rank for this course ranges between 150 to 200 for the general category.
The University offers a range of scholarships. Some of the scholarships offered at the University are the Hon'ble Chief Minister Scholarship Scheme, Tuition fees waiver for research assistance, GNLU Best Research Award Scholarships, and GNLU Gold Medal and Best Research Paper. Among all the scholarships that the University offers, GLASS stands out as it provides financial assistance to the ones who can't afford the fees. Thus, one can proudly say that GNLU actively contributes to the litigation sector, which is the need of the hour. It is not easy to pen down all the scholarships here due to the University's wide spectrum of financial assistance. Talking about the placements, the University is able to get about 85 percent of the people who sit for placements placed in the leading law firms like Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM), Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM), Khaitan and Co., Trilegal, Luthra & Luthra, Saraf and Partners, Indus Law among others. These are just a few of them as the roster is too lengthy.
The kind of training for landing these jobs is not just a one-day process. It is what the essence of GNLU is. Majorly, there are four requisites for landing a good placement: I. Grades (which are indispensable, be it in any course or field), II. Internships, III. Publications and IV. Moot Courts.
A law student must intern every semester if they want to land a good job. But you may wonder how does Gujarat Law University help with it? The answer is simple-through its internship and placement cell which guides you for internships at every step. The cell is very active and tries to land good internships for students, which would ultimately land them a great placement.
Talking about publications, the environment at GNLU is very conducive. The professors actively help the students with their research papers because publications in the resume matter. They reflect the theoretical knowledge and understanding of a person regarding simple as well as complex issues. Writing and publishing research papers really help if one wants a suitable placement, and NLU Gujarat aids in it.
Coming to the Moot Courts is a unique and integral part of any law school. It is an activity that tests the person's drafting and oratory skills, one of a lawyer's essential skills. GNLU actively conducts moot courts and encourages every student to participate in it.
Through moot courts and internships, a person gets to apply their bookish knowledge, gain industry experience, and learn the practical aspects of law. It is the kind of practical training needed to land a great job, and GNLU does its job well by helping out the students in the best possible way possible.
The campus is a bustling place that spans over 60 acres. The classes have been designed in an auditorium style and are fully air-conditioned. One of GNLU's best assets is its resourceful library. It is an extensive, three-story library with a wide range of book collections. The entire campus is wi-fi enabled. The mess is a common mess that has two storeys, and it is also air-conditioned.
Additionally, there is a night mess which serves economical meals and that too till 2:00 a.m., making it an excellent option if you get hungry at night or even if you are just a midnight-muncher like me. The college also features a cafeteria and gym in addition to that. The cafe is open until 12:30, and the gym is open till 9 at night.
A gynaecologist visits twice a week in addition to the one doctor who sees during the day. In the girls' hostel itself, there is a clinic with a nurse on duty 24/7. The University also has a games room where one can indulge in activities like snooker, table tennis, carrom, etc. For those who enjoy sports, the college also features a ground for football, basketball, tennis etc.
The institute also features good laboratories for the B.Sc LLB students. Additionally, a fantastic place to visit in GNLU is the legal history museum. It is a one-of-a-kind museum where you can learn about law's history and evolution. Thus, the University offers every opportunity in terms of infrastructure and is liberal in every respect.
