The existence of the Government College of Art and Craft - GCAC Kolkata dates back to 1864. The college is one among the oldest and premier institutions providing art education in India. Currently, the college is working under the jurisdiction of University of Calcutta, Kolkata and is accredited by NAAC.
Vision and Mission: The College works to achieve its vision and mission of promoting true and genuine art to the future generation and to shape the cultural trend of the nation.
GCAC Kolkata runs Bachelor’s of Fine Arts (4 years) and Master of Fine Arts in Indian painting styles, Textile Design, Ceramic Art and Pottery, Modeling and Sculpture, Graphic Design, Wood and Leather Design, and Printmaking. The medium of instruction in all the courses is English and Bengali.
Students are shortlisted for admission based on their performance in the entrance examination and viva voce besides fulfilling the eligibility criteria for the courses they have applied for. Students can apply for a number of scholarships supported by the college and funded by government and non government bodies. Indira Gandhi Scholarship for the Single Girl Child, OASIS Scholarship by the West Bengal Government, Swami-Vivekananda Merit-Cum-Means Scholarship Scheme, Rashbihari Dutta Memorial Scholarship, Ajoy Bankim Memorial Scholarship, Romen Roy Scholarship, are among the several scholarships granted by the college. Besides the scholarships, the meritorious students are also awarded several awards funded by different private organisations and personalities. Rathin Mitra Award, Rabindranath Tagore Award, Geeta Das Award, Biswamit Cash Award, etc are awarded to students who performed exceptionally well.
GCAC Kolkata campus is spread across 1.58 acres of land in Chowringhee neighborhood of Kolkata. The campus is adjacent to the Indian Museum and is well connected by road and rail. The infrastructure and learning resources in the college are designed in a way to enhance the artistic skills and knowledge among its students. All the seven departments in the college have access to the internet. The College has Libraries and Resource Centers which stocks collection of rare art related books, journals, periodicals, and other learning resources. The access to e-learning resources in the library is currently unavailable.
GCAC campus has studios, workspaces, exhibition spaces, and galleries that allow its students to showcase their artistic skills. The studios are equipped with various tools, materials, and equipment required in different artistic disciplines. The audio-visual facilities, TV monitors, projectors, laptops, and desktops are available in the two smart classrooms in the campus. Other than these, the college campus has Common rooms and Printmaking and Photography Labs for students. An in-house canteen has been functioning providing snacks, refreshments, and other food items. There’s a small playground in the campus for recreation purposes.
