National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal established in 1923 is a Deemed to be University, currently having 2nd position in NIRF Ranking 2024. National Dairy Research Institute Karnal is approved by ICAR and UGC. National Dairy Research Institute was established in 1923. It aims at the holistic development of the students and is amongst the premier institutes which have contributed to the growth of the dairy industry. It was formerly known as Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying. It was renamed as Imperial Dairy Institute in 1936 and was again renamed as National Dairy Research Institute in 1955. It is approved by ICAR.

NDRI has a Placement Cell which provides guidance, support, and assistance to the students. Students are provided with summer training so that they get hands – on experience. The Cell organises student research programs, experiential learning projects, quality assurance and management programs for the students, and assists them with internships and placements.
Ananda Dairies Nestle India, Abbott Nutrition, GCMMF, Punjab Milk Federation, Mother Dairy, Tetra Pak India, SPX Technologies, etc. are the major recruiters granting placement to the students.
NDRI is spread over 560 hectares and has approximately 1800 dairy animals with shelter management system and modern milking parlor system catering to the research activities and breeds improvement projects. There is also a commercial Model Dairy Plant which has the processing capacity of 60,000+ liters of milk which helps in providing hands – on training experience to the students.
