Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar was established in the year 1979 as a Public Educational Institution. Dera Natung Government College Itanagar came into existence as, ‘Government College, Itanagar’ on 6th September 1979. The College was renamed as ‘Dera Natung Government College’ in 2001-02 academic sessions to pay tribute to the Education Minister, Late Dera Natung for his remarkable contributions in the field of education. Currently, the college is functioning under the jurisdiction of Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar. It is accredited by NAAC.

Mission: Its mission is to make students intellectual, capable, and innovative visionary leaders so that they can serve the society with respect, honor, and modesty.
Students can pursue undergraduate and short duration certificate courses in different disciplines like Botany, Zoology, Anthropology, Political Science, Chemistry, Physics, History, and more are provided to students.
Seats are reserved in the college on the basis of merit for the students of Catchment Area and Non-Catchment Area in all the courses.

The Arunachal Pradesh Schedule Tribe (APST) students can avail a number of scholarships supported by the college. The scholarships granted by the college under state scheme are: Umbrella Scheme for Education of ST Children, Post Matric Scholarship for ST students of Arunachal Pradesh, and Scheme for award of Stipend for ST students of Arunachal Pradesh. To avail one of the state scholarships, students must submit the online application form on the National Scholarship Portal.
Apart from the state scholarships, students can apply for Ishan Uday Scholarship, Education Scholarship from AP Building & Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, and NEC Merit Scholarship.
Note: Students can avail any one scholarship at a time. Also, 75% attendance is compulsory to apply for any of the scholarships mentioned above.

The Career Counseling and Placement Cell in the college guides its students on how to secure admission in renowned universities in India and abroad for higher education and to explore the placement opportunities in government and private organisations. For this, it conducts various activities such as seminars, workshops, awareness programs, counseling, etc. Furthermore, there is an Entrepreneurship Development Cell in the college whose aim is to nurture entrepreneurial skills among its students.
The government college started its academic curriculum from a Government Higher Secondary School building, Itanagar and later, in 1986, shifted to its present campus at Vivek Vihar, P.O. R.K. Mission, Itanagar. Since then, rapid growth was seen in the expansion of the infrastructure in the campus. The Academic and Administrative block in the campus provides various facilities for an efficient teaching and learning environment. The Auditorium is housed in the centre of the college and is equipped with facilities for cultural, literary, and indoor sports.
