Annamalai University is a public university in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu. There were three reputed colleges were established in the decade of the 1920s by Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar. With the help of local government then, Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar agreed to turn over his babies Sri Minakshi Sanskrit College, Sri Minakshi Tamil College, and Sri Minakshi College into a university and today they are known as Annamalai University which were formed way back in 1928. The current chancellor of the University is Mr. Banwarilal Purohit. The University also has four affiliated colleges. Annamalai University Chidambaram is one of the largest universities in India as it is spread in over 950 acres of land. It is South Asia's largest autonomous and residential University. All in all, it has 49 departments split into ten faculties. The courses at the university range in various domains of marine sciences, arts, science, education, fine arts, Indian languages, engineering and technology, medicine, agriculture, and dentistry. These faculties are then further divided into many departments. For example, in the science faculty, there are ten departments. That includes the likes of mathematics, physics, chemistry, statistics, botany, zoology, earth sciences, biochemistry in biotechnology, microbiology, and computer and information science.

According to NIRF 2019, the university has made the cut in top 150 universities in India. It was placed 12th and 25th for pharmacy and medicine respectively. Annamalai University is listed among the top 1500 universities in 2019 by Times Higher Education World University Ranking and the top 500 universities for its physical and life science programs. In the 2019 QS World Rankings, the University is ranked 298 in Asia, 74 in BRICS, and 43 in India. For its ongoing participation in scientific collaboration and success, the University was ranked 20th in the CWTS Leiden rating. In terms of top government universities in India, it comes in at number 13 and is ranked the seventh best University in Tamil Nadu.
The Annamalai University admission process isn’t that easy as one has to qualify for the University's entrance exam. The eligible students than has to go through a personal interview. A student's admission depends on appearing for the course-specific competitive exam. The Annamalai University Admission application form can be processed online. The application form has to be submitted with relevant documents which are mentioned there. As per the Tamil Nadu state government's reservation policies, admission to all courses is purely on merit. Annamalai University provides an equal opportunity for all through its scholarship cell which offers merit-based scholarship to all the deserving students. The university also provides a post-matric scholarship and scholarship for students who are the first graduates of their respective families. The Annamalai University scholarships are always in the favour of students who come from underprivileged families. The criteria for them is that their family income has to be below 2.5 lakhs per year. The University also offers scholarships to SC/STs who converted to Christianity.

Speaking of the Annamalai University's placements, the University has established a separate Directorate of Training, Placement, and Entrepreneurship. The University organizes training programs every year. The program includes workshops for teaching entrepreneurship and preparing students for competitive examination. Student’s communication skills, soft skills, and personality development are also honed by the department. The average package for an engineering graduate of Annamalai University ranges between 2.5-3 lakh LPA. The main recruiters of engineering college of the university are Sterlite Technologies, NOCL, TVS Electronics, Capgemini Technology, M.N. Dastur & Company Pvt. Ltd., etc.
The University organizes an alumni program to foster beneficial interaction between the ex-alumni and current students. This initiative has helped improve the placement prospects for the students. The average package for other major course like B. Pharma ranges between 2-3 lakhs. The major recruiters for Pharmacy and Medicine are Apollo Hospitals, One Line Home Health Care, and Sri Ramchandra Hospital among others. Since the University offers so many courses, it is tough to state the placement record. Almost 70% of university students receive placements every year.
Annamalai University with an area of nearly 1000 acres has facilities to boast for. Since, the university is over 9 decades old, one can find a mix of new and old in the university. Some of the university buildings have been preserved for 9 decades while most of them have been renovated and are today no less than being called a modern-day marvel. Guest House – Since, most students here are outsiders and it is inevitable that students will have visitors every now and then, the guest house of the university are built to suit pockets of all. There are 5 AC suites at the guest house that costs INR 2500 a day. Then there are two variants in AC rooms and they are AC rooms with TV and AC rooms without TV. The rooms cost 1500 and 1200 respectively. The Non-Ac rooms cost INR 600 a day.
Hostels – There are 20 hostels at the campus including boys and girls. Out of all the hostels, one that stands out is International Student Hostel. The other hostels of the university are Convener Hostel, Kayal Illam Hostel, Malligai Illam Hostel, Diamond Jubilee Hostel, and New Medical Hostel among others. Each hostels has their own mess, however, students are free to choose the mess of their own as there are over 20+ mess in the university.
Sports Facilities – Unless and until sporting facilities are made available, the students will nag a university. Unfortunately, though, the university hasn’t given that chance to their students because they have built the finest of sporting facilities at its campus. Starting with the indoor stadium that has 2 internationals styled badminton courts. There is also an indoor basketball court and other indoor sporting facilities includes Table Tennis, Chess, and others. Outdoor sporting facilities are even special as there are two hard courts for students who loves playing Tennis. Chennai was the city that gave India it’s first ever tennis player in Vijay Amritraj and therefore coaches have been hired to train the students who want to hone their playing skills in tennis. Besides that, there is a volleyball court, basketball court, and sports grounds which are adept if one wish to play sports like cricket, football, or others.
Yoga Centre – The world has realized the potential of Yoga now and therefore the university has built a special Yoga centre inside the campus. The centre does provide many certification programs in Yoga but at the same time students who just wants to practice yoga are free to join. The Yoga centre has thus far trained over 50k individuals. Many VIPs have come to the Yoga centre of the university and have participated in the meditation program of the centre that runs every evening.

Annamalai University focuses on the fields of Agriculture, Engineering, Medical, Humanities, Science, and Management. The university various UG, PG, and Research programs with different specializations. Students should meet all the eligibility criteria and submit the required documents to enroll for the admission process. They need to pass the college entrance examination and face a personal interview to secure their admission. Students must maintain 75% of attendance to appear in the semester-end examinations. Students can also join the university by qualifying in required national level entrance examinations with eligible marks.
Annamalai University has set up a library within an area of 36000 sq ft in an H shaped structure, with a well-controlled lobby, huge and well-ventilated central reading hall, reference hall, and periodicals hall. It provides access to the internet, Info Net lab, and E-journal collection, helping students to enhance their knowledge and equip themselves to solve problems of the corporate field. The library provides reprographic facilities, stack rooms, virtual libraries, and high-speed internet facilities installed with computers to do research work. The library comprises around 4lakhs of reading materials related to different streams in the Science section around 27000 books are available, in Arts 35000 books, around 13000 back volumes, and 15000 reading material in the reference section. The library has a subscription to various online and offline platforms, magazines, newspapers, to stay up to date with the latest trends and reading materials.
