Patna University is one of the oldest universities in India, situated near the banks of the River Ganga. It was established in 1917, and in 1952 it was completely transformed into a teaching-residential university. The university is located in the heart and capital city of Bihar. The campus size of the university is around 181 acres. It has a total 8 numbers of faculties and 42 departments.
It has 31 postgraduate departments in the faculties of Sciences, Humanities, Education, and Social Sciences, as well as 4 institutes in Psychology, Public Administration, Music, and Library. Patna University is one of the finest universities in Bihar State that offers undergrad and post graduate courses. Patna University also provides Ph.D. in various languages like Sanskrit, Hindi, English, and Arabic, etc.
Patna University also offers Distance Learning Education since many students from villages or distant areas are not able to attend the college. There are also 10 other colleges attached to Patna University. These 10 colleges are; BN College, Patna Science, Training, Law & Women’s College; Commerce College; Magadha Women’s College; Patna College; Arts & Crafts College; and one training college for women.
Patna University also offers PG diploma courses in Industrial Safety and Rural Management. Other than these, the university offers a PG diploma in Bio Informatics and Computer Applications.
The university has very limited infrastructure, yet every year many students pass exams conducted by UGC and UPSC. The students of Bihar state are attracted towards civil services, so they prefer getting into Patna University and start preparing for the UPSC and state exams since college day.
The faculties also help students prepare for the competitive exams. There were many notable alumni of this college; BC ROY, 1st CM of West Bengal; Krishna Sinha, 1st CM of Bihar, to name a few.
Patna University offers many courses in UG regular, vocational, PG regular, self-financing courses, BLIS, and LLB. The university admits students to these various courses based on the entrance exam PUCET. Admission of the students is based on the marks they score in test and a merit list is prepared. Students must submit a fully completed form online in the departments of the university in which they are interested.
PUCET: Patna University Common Entrance Test is conducted to admit students to different UG, PG, and vocational courses. The entrance test consists of 100 marks, and it’s an objective-based question paper. The examination is in pen and paper mode and is two hours long. The final merit list is prepared based on the PUCET score, choice of programme, and reservation decided by the Govt. of Bihar. After making it to the merit list, students have to attend counselling and pay the fees. Before fee submission, the college administration asks students to submit the required documents. The process is easy and simple to get admission.
Patna University is a public institution that comes under the state of Bihar. This is the reason that fees are very low and also the reserved category and students with disabilities get extra benefits. This university provides central and state government-based scholarships to students.
The National Handicapped Finance & Development Corporation (NHFDC) has announced scholarships for a total of 2500 students who fall under the disability category. 2000 scholarships are given to PG students who wish to do professional & technical courses. Out of these, 30% of scholarships are only for girls. Moreover, 500 scholarships are given to students who want to do various technical courses post-metric. This scholarship can only be available to students who are differently abled. Those who wish to get these scholarships can directly apply online at NHFDC’s website and give the hard copy to the university administration. Patna University also helps students with Mexican government scholarship, which is only for Indian students.

Patna University consists of a counselling and placement cell on their campus to help students during placements. Time and again, many corporate bodies have shown their interest in students of different departments of the university. The Piramal Group has been visiting the campus to recruit post-graduate students for the Gandhi Fellowships. The Patna University Placement Cell has invited more than 1000 organisations so far. Major recruiters like ITC Group, Wipro, and many insurance-based companies visited the campus and hired students with potential.
Patna University has also partnered with Medha Foundation to promote and encourage entrepreneurial ideas in the students of Bihar, especially those who come from small villages of the state. The cell also helps students with public speaking, leadership skills and conducts sessions and workshops to groom them for interviews. The Azim Premji Foundation has been visiting the campus to hire students for the Associate jobs. The foundation selects desired students after taking written and interview tests.
Patna University gives many facilities to the students and professors that work on the campus. The university is famous for its big library, which is spread over a 1.22-acre area of the campus. The library of this university is the major attraction on the entire campus. It is an added benefit to students who are doing their graduate and postgraduate studies in library sciences.
This library has a total of 3 floors, consisting of many books, journals, magazines, and manuscripts. It has more than 5000 old but very rare books of national importance. The thousand-year-old manuscripts are written in many languages like Sanskrit, Nepali, Tamil, Bengali, Urdu, Persian, etc.
The campus has a health centre, a yoga centre, and an IT cell for the students. The university has hostel facilities for those who are not day scholars or from Patna. The hostel has laundry, mess, and running water facilities. The university has a sports committee that does all the work related to sports in the university as well as in the affiliated colleges. The central dispensary on the campus has 12 qualified doctors who take care of students and the staff at the university. The campus also has a grievance cell and an anti-ragging committee for students if they face any kind of problems.
