The Central Institute of Fisheries Education was established in 1961 by the Government of India. The purpose is to impart education and training to service personnel of fisheries to support their development activities. It is committed to develop trained and qualified manpower to plan, execute, and manage fisheries development programs. The institute also provides basic research and strategic research in the domain of fisheries science. CIFE is a Deemed University which is approved by UGC and is under the administrative control of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and was established with the assistance of UNDP / Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO).
