Kannur University, Kannur established in 1996 is a State University, currently having 151-200 position in NIRF Ranking 2024. Kannur University is a public university located in the Kannur district of Kerala, founded in 1996. The university is affiliated with UGC and AIU and also reaccredited by NAAC with a B++ grade. The old name of the university was "Malabar University," and later it was renamed Kannur University. The purpose of setting up this university in Kerala was simple: to provide the nearby people with higher education. It is a multi-campus university and for study purposes and research facilities, other campuses are set up at different locations in Kerala. The Kerala state government provides support funds to run Kannur University. The chancellor of the university is the current governor of Kerala state.
The major departments in the university are law, management, anthropology, IT, and economics. The university also has a separate sports sciences faculty, to help sports students. The physical education department gives training to students who want to make a career in sports. The university offers UG, PG, and Ph.D. courses in Physical Education along with many certificate courses in fitness and swimming. As we know, Kerala has produced many athletes time and again, so it’s a great place for students who want to make a career in sports. The university also provides a diploma in Kalarippayattu, the oldest form of martial arts.
Other than BA, MA, BSc, and MSc in the mainstream subjects, the university also provides MA and Ph.D. in journalism and mass communication. If we talk about industry-related subjects, then students can do an MSc in Wood Sciences and Technology. The students gain theoretical knowledge at the campus, and for practical knowledge, they visit Western India Plywood Company. Students can also pursue a BA-LLB, LLM, or Ph.D. in the field of law. Kannur University also offers Ph.D. in various fields. Kannur University also has a school of distance learning and offers 17 different courses out of which 10 are UG courses. The idea behind distance learning education is to provide education to everyone who is living in far villages of Kerala or India.
Kannur University receives many applications every year, but only a limited number of students are admitted. To get admission, candidates have to submit an online application on the university website. Kannur University has an online centralized allotment to submit applications online, after which a candidate is selected on a merit basis.
The 10+2 marks are the basic criteria considered by the university admissions department for UG admissions. The seats are divided into merit seats, community seats, and reserved seats. 5% of seats are reserved for people with disabilities. There are also reserved seats for people who are excellent at sports and games and have played games at state, national or international levels. Bonus marks are also given to NCC/NSS candidates, and an extra 15 marks are awarded to students who had Scouts/Guides/Rangers at 10+2 level. There are also additional seats for widows or wards of armed forces personnel that were killed in action.
To get admission to a PG program, students have to follow the same process. The only difference is the marks they get in qualifying examinations are the basis to decide their merit. After the entire process, if students make it to the merit list, they have to submit the fee to the university. They also have to submit the required documents as asked by the university administration. After the complete verification of the documents, students start to attend the classes.
Kannur University offers a large number of scholarships to students at UG and PG levels. Kannur University covers all the scholarships that are launched by the Kerala State Govt. and Central Govt. From covering E Grantz scholarships to national scholarships by the central government, under which financial help is given to SC, ST, OBC, and EWS students as per the government rules.
Kannur University also assists students with scholarships that are launched by the Kerala Govt. time and again. The DCE and DMW scholarships are only available to minorities and people with disabilities in the state. They are awarded to students who wish to pursue a higher post-metric.
Kannur University also gives financial aid to the children of fishermen who are poor and cannot afford their studies. The other scholarships covered by Kannur University are the INSPIRE and MHRD Scholarships for UG and PG students. Research fellowships and stipends are also given to MPhil and Ph.D. students. There are also scholarships available for Ph.D. students. They are UGC-CSIR NET, UGC NET, ICAR NET, DBT NET, and Maulana Azad National Fellowships for minority students, to name a few.

There is also a training institute for civil services students which help them with pre and main exams. It conducts test series on a weekly basis and also guides them prepare for interviews. This institute within the university works as a booster for students who wish to join the civil services. It also conducts seminars, discussions, and smart classes for preparation.
There is also a synthetic track for athletes to run and an indoor stadium for football, volleyball, and basketball players. The university has a swimming pool, a gym, and a physiotherapy centre for athletes. It also has an Ayurveda research centre, an IT centre, and many other facilities. The university also has guest house and hostels located on the other campus of the university.
